When building an authority site, is the 1 to 2% rule of thumb for keyword density based on IN-TEXT density or FULL PAGE density? i.e including meta title, keywords, description, alt image tags, headings, etc.

You guys are over thinking it.

Just write good content and sprinkle your main keywords in there and make sure the article is interesting and doesn't sound redundant.

Just use the your keyword in meta and also use in body text if you adding 500 words article then you can use your keyword 3 to 4 times in article. It will be enough i guess !

It's not a rule of thumb and I always take the density of the body, in the above cases the "FULL PAGE" or "ALL TEXT".

You mean you use the BODY TEXT above.

    HTML:
    http://tools.seobook.com/general/keyword-density/
For example on this site you use the body text once the results appear.

I guess I didn't made myself clear. In the above case I take the all text, meaning I count all keywords on page, no matter if they are in the article, footer, menu or you name it.

If you are not doing pure KW stuffing and writting the natural way, you will end up in around 3-4% KW density. I think that's OK [full page]

I always take into account the full page rather than just the article body. My articles are usually around 2000 words so it naturally comes to around 1.5-2%.
If you have shorter articles it will typically result in a higher keyword density even if the article is naturally written.
