Hi, I'm new to IM and i was wondering if someone could give me a run down on how to apply for a EIN/EID. I don't know what to choose like "sole proprietor" and so on.

    Thank you

Are you in the US or a US citizen as if not the process is much more complex and can take a while. I can help if you are not in the US but if you from the US just contact the IRS and they will help you.

You would be a sole proprietor as you are working under your own name I'm assuming. You would know if you were a corporation or the other options as you would have completed other legal work to obtain for a example an LLC.

Of course if you want to be really safe you should contact your accountant.

Odd, the IRS site where you learn all the information on what is needed to apply online for an EIN doesn't answer your question?

Please, like your good Uncle asks restate the question.

If you are looking for an ITIN you can find that on the IRSs site too.

Or, if you need a business I am sure someone with a For Sales thread, such as Uptownbulker, could help.

You need a business name to get an EIN. You can go full out and incorporate or you can go small with a dba (doing business as) which is also known as an anonymous name. In my state it is extremely cheap at only $50 for 5 years. Once you have the biz name you can immediately register on the irs website for an EIN and they give it to you right away.

DBA's are not anonymous john, they are public records.

That is true even though they call dba's anonymous names. One thing I noticed in my state is you can have the same exact dba as someone else. There can be 500 people whose dba is ABC Company. So if you register your dba for something very common it is incredibly complicated to figure out who you are.
