I know this question has probably been answered before, but I cannot seem to find an answer

I know that links should be publicly viewable, but if I can get .edu and .gov that are not, are they any good to me at all? Or are they basically invisible to the spiders?

If you can't see them google probably cannot either. The only caveat is if it's a forum that has allowed googlebot but it's not likely.
