When checking your competitors backlinks for a specific keyword set, do you check the individual page or their base domain as the backlink competition?

For example the search key words are Red fire truck (just random example)

and the competitor for number 1 is

    www.truckmasters.com/redfiretruck

When checking the backlink competition do i base it off of

www.truckmasters.com/redfiretruck (the actual result of the search)

    or

    www.truckmasters.com/ ?

because the specific page might only have 10 backlinks but the domain might show 3000.

Depends which URL is ranking for the keyword to want to rank for. If its the url: www.truckmasters.com/redfiretruck that is ranking well and you want to beat it then that is the page that you should check the backlinks too.

oh ok awesome, that should be 100 times easier than beating their base domain itself. Thanks!
