Hey guys, I recently started a business where i am selling computer components, electronics etc. via my website. Before the april udpate my website was ranking and indexing really well. Having no SEO experience i made a lot of mistakes by copying product descriptions from either competition websites or manufacturer pages, since april my website got hit by the google udpate and indexed pages went from around 13000 to 1200...i also lost ranking on google search as well.

Since then ive been doing a lot of reading on various websites on how to improve your ranking and content...so in order to get my website's position back up in google, i removed all the copy pasted content that i had from other websites (this was only the product descritpion text and images) and have been suggested to convert all the text into an image and give it an alt text with the keyword i want ranked against that page. Just wanted to ask is this a better way to get ranked or should i stick with text and include the keyword in there? For those who couldnt understand what im trying to say heres a short summary.

For an E-commerce website where i have around 1500 products, should i have text in product description or convert all of it into an image and include they keyword i want as an alt text?.

Thank you and looking forward to your suggestions.

You must to have text in product description to get that page ranked easily.
Tough to rank a product page with images & alt tags.

Also you mentioned that you got hit by Google. 80% impossible to rank a website which was penalized by Google.

Note: Most of the brand E-Commerce websites has duplicated description & specifications. Even you cannot avoid those.
Ex: Specification of Samsung Notebook 2 is always same (Impossible to change or re-write the specification).

thank you kevin for the reply and guidance. Ill look into incorporating text as a product description rather than image and alt tags...the main problem that i wanted to avoid was duplicated content but as you said yourself its impossible to do that.

Look at the index graph from webmasters that i have attached.

It would be much better to unclude some unique text in product descriptions and build quality backlinks. You can try to place good text description on few products and see results.

iamextreme, Sudden drops in the indexing rate shows you may get penalized by Google.
Note: Forums cannot avoid duplicated threads & E-commerce sites cannot avoid duplicated specifications/descriptions

    Good Luck baby!

So you're saying that my site "MAY" get penalized? The problem i noticed yesterday was that google just does not want to display my website for any of the keywords that i have optimised my pages for. even if the keywords are of low competition...my website would just not show up on google...any ideas why this could be?
