Last night I had ~1100 backlinks according to yahoo site explorer and now today it has dropped to ~600. What can likely explain this? Thanks

what kind of links were they? profile links and comment spam links drop like flies due to mods deleting profiles/comments. Also in my experience you shouldnt worry about how many links show up on yahoo..as long as youre still getting results.

Also make sure you're checking the same url. Yahoo site explorer will show different results for www and without.

Spammy links will drop over time - end of story. Thats why they have to continually be added to.

Thanks for the quick reply , one other question. The backlinks that get removed will that negatively impact my SERP ranking if I don't get my link count back to what it used to be for next cache reindexing? (assuming for this case that all the links were spammy ones with little SERP impact)

I hate to answer your question with a "Depends" answer. but it all does..

It depends on competition, keywords, niche. ect;..ect;..ect;..

I guess the question I have for you is this.. Now that you don't see links within yahoo explorer.... did your rankings change??

It happened before, I believe yahoo site explorer is doing their index reshuffle. Check other major sites and your competitors and you will see what I mean.
