How the hell does it know how many people are hitting sites? There is no universal code installed on sites. Do they actually have some type of physical system set up to sift through traffic?

They have a toolbar and an extremely inaccurate traffic estimate model based on what they perceive to be their market share.

They count the visitors which visit your site and have alexa toolbar and rest is left to assumption.

    lol

Look, they only have data from the users that have their tool.bar installed.

It's simple, they have a tracking system on the toolbars that 100's of thousands of people have. When users visit a website with the toolbar installed, it will send a mark for the website.

Let me know if that helped?

It is heavily weighted towards certain demographics, webmasters being a prime example. It is pretty much worthless as a metric.

I see. I didn't think it could possibly be correct.. You know, it should be part of w3 validation that you install a 1 line tracking code, on all sites, so there is a true estimate of the traffic.
