I have seen several threads about the 301 method so I decided to give it a go.

    Background-
Had a site that ranked #2 for a keyword about 6-8 months ago but then it predictably got penalized. Kept the domain active and used it as a funnel since it still drove some traffic via BING and Yahoo. Recently I created a new site with about 45 pages, only 12 have content the rest are just placeholders for future content, its about 2 months old close to EMD (it has a "-" in between the keywords like blue-widgets.net) and no rankings since I have done nothing for the site in terms of SEO yet.

Just to see what would happen I redirected the old site to the new site (same exact niche) around 2 weeks ago. Nothing happened. Still no rankings.

    A couple of questions ...

I was under the impression that redirected sites do not pass a penalty, at least at 1st. Is this true?
If so I would have thought that the new site would have started ranking for some of the lower competition keywords by now.

For those that have successfully used the 301 from an old domain, what other steps did you take?

Just trying to figure out what I may have missed.

Remember this is not a fresh domain, its one that has been around for 3 years and ranked for many low and medium volume keywords in the past.

A 301 passes everything. EVERYTHING! Good and bad.

    No it's not.

Add a niche relevant article to the old domain, wait until it gets indexed, then 301 to new domain.

Thats what I thought but others vehemently disagreed, based on what I have seen so far I would say you 2 are correct.

**EDIT** Let me qualify this by saying, the ones that disagreed DID say that got a penalty but only after some time. They explained their method like this:
    Create a stie
    Buy Expired or Dropped domain
    Send links to new domain
once indexed 301 new domain to money site
    Rank and bank
    Penalty to money site
    Create new domain
Point Old 301 and 301 recently penalized domain to new money site
New money site ranks and banks
    Gets penalized, rinse/repeat

They mentioned that the new fresh money site would assume the rankings of the old (penalized) site for a time until eventually the new one got smacked, but in my very limited test it looks like my old, formerly ranking domain, did nothing to help the fresh money site.

Make NO Mistake, the penalties are for domains, 301 does pass everything except the penalty. Thats about it and that's about all :)

Well see this is different than what anyone has said on this thread and also not what I have experienced.

Make no mistake, I am not certain that it passed a penalty as I do not have the site set up on GWT but in 2 weeks it has not improved a single ranking and in fact took one very low volume KW that was at 15 to "gone" now. The redirected site is still ranking in Bing so it has some juice going to it and it previously ranked #2 for a KW at around 20k searches per month.

While I did not expect to get to #2 again right away, I was hoping to see a few low volume keywords start showing up by now. Nothing has happened except the loss of the one keyword I DID have. While I cannot confirm it was a penalty, it surely has not helped anything.

Was your old site indexed in google before you 301'd the domain? If it was then the penalty may have passed quickly...
