i've got a script that shows two different pages -- a regular page to visitors and a "special" page to search engines.

this is an old script/trick and i was wondering how safe this is to use today?

Well the search engines have definitely gotten smarter, but there is nothing you can do about that. You will probably be safe with yahoo and msn, but google is a different beast than it was 6 months ago. I wouldn't use the same cloaker if it hasn't been updated man.

The core of any cloaking script is its ability to identify the spiders from the humans. It can have all the bells and whistles you wish for but if it sucks at that it's useless.

I use Fantomaster Shadowmaker (and a couple more scripts) and it is around since 2006.
What makes this script powerful is its integration with the Fantomaster botbase. In the past it's scraping abilities and the way it optimizes content were major selling points but many (mostly Wordpress plugins) scripts have surpassed it on that.
There are a couple more out there that uses the same botbase.

Hopefully it's not just a UA detection script, in fact even the bot lists are old and out of date.

The script to "make" the shadowsite runs on my server. One install is enough unless you want to use the tracking function.

The script that updates the botbase runs on my servers as well.
It fetches the updates from the Fantomaster server.

Every server where you have the shadowdomains should have it's own install of the botbase-script as an extra layer of protection.

    Hope that answers your question.

The Fantomaster DB is supposed to be the best out there for Cloaking applications. I'm pretty sure they sell subscriptions; if you're a developer you could probably just integrate their DB with your existing script.

No need though? why subscribe and not create your own list? I used to use lists, it's too slow these days. That's cloaking 1.0. too bad their isnt a private forum to discuss other stuff, no way am i sharing too much in an open forum
