    Hi Guys,

So, I'd like to start adding some original content to my blog, and I was thinking of doing a type of "localhost journey", where I implement something cool into Wordpress, which you wouldn't normally expect to see.

For example, a few months ago I was asked to create a demo of a Wordpress based forum, with an interactive map on the homepage. The forum would automatically show pins on the map, based on the location of whoever posted the thread. It was a quick project, but I thought it was cool.

So, does anyone have any creative ideas, within reason? I don't consider myself a developer, but I'm keen to use the limited PHP knowledge I have to push myself, if I can't find a cool plugin that does what I need.

Maybe you should take existing plugins and modify them to see what happens? Get some popular plugin everyone uses and check how it works interally. Who knows, there are infinite ideas really.

Something that shows a different monkey putting money in his papal per visit? I'd visit that often :)

It's a good idea. I've done some interesting plugin modifications in the past.

I just recently finished adding a currency converter and paypal functionality to a quotation calculator plugin on my own site. It wasn't necessarily very fun lol, but it was a successful project.

If I can remember what I did, maybe I'll stick a guide up onto my blog sometime.

Anyone got pictures of the Google staff? Those monkeys would look good on my blog ;)

Plugins are basically programs that react to events on the blog. You subscribe to certain events and then program PHP to respond to that in a certain way.

One fun project I did long ago was a plugin that reacted to a post being shown. I intercepted the content and spun it using Markov chains. Markov chains are really fun, you get real looking English but it's 100% fake content. But since it's generated from actual English statistics, it passes most automated checks for spun content.

    Maybe that's an idea ;)

^ Cheers! I don't know if I've found the plugin you're talking about, but I seem to have found a site with very similar functionality in the midst of all my Googling. I'll see if I can reverse engineer this ;)

So, I don't know if this is stupidly easy or hard to do, but I was wondering if someone could make a plugin/widget that allowed me to change the contents of the sidebar depending on what category a given post was in. I was thinking something along the lines of having one widget that gets placed into your "default" sidebar, with calls to other customizable sidebars that get selected from based on category. So this way, if people were in, say, the "funny" category, the sidebar might show a funny picture (or maybe a targeted ad?), and if they were in the "love" category, they might get a sexy picture (or a dating ad), etc.

Definitely possible with just one sidebar and this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/widget-logic/, and it's pretty easy if you know some PHP.

Add all your widgets to one sidebar, and then assign a condition to each of them.

You'll just add something like this to the widget you want to show in the "funny" category, for example:
    Code:
    is_category('funny')
Edit: This plugin is even easier to use, if you don't know PHP: https://wordpress.org/plugins/conditional-widgets/

Fascinating. So would I just add the same widget to my sidebar 5 times or whatever, but have each instance activate under a different if statement? Wonder if that could end up getting resource intensive if there's a lot I want to fiddle with...

Yes exactly. Or rather, you'll add 5 different widgets, depending on what you want to show in each category.

I don't think it would make that much difference to site speed, but it depends on what type of content you're adding to the sidebars.
