Hey everyone. So i've been having this debate with myself lately. I am a dancer/musician in Uni. Pursuing

a bachelors in Advertising & Public Relations. Its my third year so far and Im almost done. I am very

advanced in music production , song writing, singing. It has been my main hobby for a while. I

have done performances, danced in music videos on MTV Vh1 fuse etc.

So Recently , I took a look at my life and noticed that hey, WTF am I going to do after college?!

Im really not a 9 to 5 guy and I have the entrepreneur mindset that most of us have on this forum. I want to pursue IM as my main hobby. But with the cost of this I would have to put my hobby for music aside if i really want to take this seriously. For example, I usually compose tons of music and lyrics on my freetime, but the time spent on that can easily be placed on working towards something much more beneficial and profitable for me in the future. Instead of writing song lyrics, I can be writing some good content for my sites etc. So overall my question is.

Choose a Hobby ? Music [ that can MAYBE lead to success in the future] 1 in a million.
or IM [ building a foundation for passive income] [ which is overall my main goal]. I dont want to get out of college and then im like uhhhh, what now?

sidenote * i am intermediate with IM not completely a noob. I have done lots of offline work on my own in the field of web design, animation, etc. a lot of freelance work. I am confident and I know I can make some bank online. I've been doing tons of research and have a bunch of stuff that I want to execute. The thing is , it is time consuming.

I would love some input from you all.

    Take care, Everyone.

If music is your hobby then pursue it. IM isn't really a hobby per-say. Especially if you want to make IM a career, what are you going to do in your spare time? There's room for both, you just need to learn how to balance things in your life, it's not an all or nothing thing. Perhaps you could do IM Monday-Friday and music on the weekends?

Nice to see another musician/IMer here, I myself understand.
You're spot on with them equally being time-consuming so it does almost need to be one or the other. However like me, you can find a way to use one for steady profit(may not reach it's full potential though) to fund what you really wish to do. IM to build your music or vice versa. As always...one thing will be devoted on more, so the other will be mediocre.

Thanks man, yeah thats exactly what my dilemma is right now. Basically, the way I look at it is. Hey, Im broke. I need money. As much as I love music, it isnt going to earn me income directly. & me consciously putting time into something profit-less or [not aiming towards profit] while still being broke isnt good. Priority wise.

I would pursue IM as a job/side job/extra revenue stream.. but don't give up on music, i mean its completely different. Music, sports, etc.. these things help you relax, I don't feel IM is relaxing at all, I would say quite the opposite when I see the SERPs after a google update. Do both, one to make extra cash, one to have fun and enjoy your spare time.

Also, I mean if you do IM as a side thing, its not going to lock you down for hours, if you outsource the time consuming stuff, and get a few bots/softwares to automate stuff, you'll be twiddling your thumbs most of your spare time.

Thanks for your input. I agree. me putting time into IM is really aimed towards this being my career in the future. I could potentially make money [passive income] out of music as well, but that chance is 1 out of million and its not really a realistic logic goal. Not saying its impossible. But I dont think its good to put all effort into something that has a chance of profit [music] rather than working towards definite profit, even it be a single dollar. [IM]. Overall, I dont wanna be broke without a job. Passive income is my goal. 9 to 5 is def not me. Like you said, when I get money to fund my hobbies everything will work hand in hand.

    Thanks again for your input.

thanks, I understand where you're coming from definitely. Yeah, I plan to outsource when the workload gets heavy. [and when I can afford to outsource lol]. But yeah, I look at it as work hard now, relax later.

Maybe you could combine both? E.g promote your own youtube videos and get rich and famous simultaneously! :)

I think its fine if you will pursue both IM and being a musician. As you said music helped you a lot so why didn't you use your music to feel relax if you are tried or overexposed in your work. Its a great feeling if both your dreams will come true. right?

Never EVER give up music! I work IM full time during the summer and part time while I go to uni as well but I always find time to play my guitar which I have been playing for the last 12 years.

I've got gray hairs on top of my grey hairs because of some of the things IM has thrown at me.

I love it though and certainly wouldn't dream of telling anyone to steer clear of it because when it all clicks and starts working, that's one hell of a feeling.

That being said, I think it'd cut off my left pinkie to be able to sing and/or play an instrument.

Have a crack at doing both, buddy. Just play it by ear and see how it all pans out. We're all only here for a short period of time so there's no harm in trying; just don't throw away something you're clearly good at and already enjoy.

Sometimes the grass on the other side isn't as green once you're there but that only matters if you've locked the gate behind you. ;)

Although generally I'd say pursue IM for business I also have my music business as a backup when IM things get hairy like the recent updates just rolled out.

Pursue music, but keep on top of IM for business should you need a fallback/income.

Business and IM will always be here. Have a crack at something you love first.
