Today, I signed a new line for my business and within 1-2 hours, the phone ranged a couple times asking for "ABC corp" (medium size corp). I then realized that this number once belongs to them, and its still being published on their website and all over directories etc. We are in completely different industries. No-relations at all (not even a tiny bit) - its like a plumber and dentist.

I am not sure if I hit a gold-mine in this case; Will i get in trouble if I continue using it? Or will I be sued and demand to give it back to them?

Keep in mind, I didn't buy this number on purpose, it was just assigned by that phone line carrier. I am not even sure why it was in the pool at the first place. Just confused....

lol, just setup a redirect to a premium rate number with something like "thanks for calling to speak to a representative of ABC, all our operators are busy ATM, please hold while we transfer you..." (5 minute wait, then forward to real number)

You could try ringrevenue, they do pay per call affiliate marketing. Haven't heard anything about them in a while but might be worth checking out.

I put some thoughts on this, and I am not feeling comfortable taking advantages like that. I think I will probably just contact them and ask them if they want it back. There are lots of opportunities ahead, no point of doing things like this. Thanks for your input.

Sell the calls back to ABC. If they refuse to buy sell them their nearest competitor.

Thanks for your inputs. I think you guys got your points, but how would I even 'phrase' this?
I don't want to sound like a complete asshole (even tho I did nothing wrong here).

Me: "Hey, would you like your number back"
Him/Her: "That will be great. You're a nice guy"
Me: "Not really... I plan to sell it back to you for XXXX"
    Him/Her: "err...."

If they are a medium sized corp they probably have a pretty authoritative website, maybe you could swing a trade and give their number back in exchange for a nice link on their website?

Rather than calling, try sending them an E-mail
Would be less awkward that way..
