Honestly, both are kinda sketchy, but I'd lean towards a free VPN, if I absolutely *had* to pick. At least they encrypt your traffic, even if they are selling your data.

Couldn't one use a VPN + a proxy? My problem with VPNs for creating multiple reddit accounts is that they usually get instantly suspended because it detects that I am using a proxy. How has anyone found a way around this? Even when I use a mobile hotspot on my phone I get instantly suspended. This happens even on a VM

That is not because of vpn as I am using vpn with reddit. It's because of browser fingerprint probably.

comparing both of them I would say that free vpn is better than public free proxy. VPN's have encryption, protection and privacy, whereas free public proxies do not encrypt your traffic leaving sensitive information for everyone to access. Both choices have risks and it depends on you as the user to choose which one you would prefer. Moreover VPN's and Proxies mask the user's IP address, VPN's offer a higher level of security and privacy especially if you paid for it.

Public proxies are usually less safe than free VPNs. They’re often overloaded, can inject ads or malware, and you don’t know who runs them. Free VPNs aren’t perfect either, but at least they’re a bit more stable and encrypted. If you care about safety and reliability, avoid public proxies unless you really trust the source.

Between the two, a free VPN is usually the better option just because it encrypts your traffic,which public proxies dont.Still,most free VPNs log data, serve ads, or even sell your info, and their IPs are often already flagged. Public proxies are even riskier - no encryption, widely abused, and often blacklisted on sites like Reddit or PayPal.Honestly,right now,both are pretty sketchy,If you care about privacy or reliability

There's no guarantee a free VPN will encrypt your traffic. More than 10% of free VPNs have encryption failures, something like 90% of them have some kind of leak.
A free proxy's going to be on blacklists immediately. The same say the people who put these lists together compile them, the same is true for companies that compile blacklists of open proxies.
Don't use either, but if you're going to use one anyway, your best bet is to use a freemium version of a VPN (rather than a fully free one) and accept the limitations.

Between a free VPN and a public free proxy, public proxies are hands down more dangerous. Most are flagged, overused, or even malicious (some log or sniff your traffic). At least a free VPN from a semi-reputable source encrypts your connection. But for any serious operations like account creation, automation, or scraping, you should be using real 4G/5G mobile connections ,they offer fresh, residential IPs with natural behavior and way less risk of detection or bans.
