Tracking what works and what doesn't is probably one of the most important tasks you can spend your time on in internet marketing. Great tracking leads to effective testing which leads to improvements in ROI. Or taking campaigns that lose money and transforming them into winners.

Don't GUESS what's working. Track it.

Prosper202 is a php tracking suite that up until Friday was encrypted. I've heard fantastic things about this software but didn't want to use it on any of my sites because I couldn't peek under the hood and make sure that my conversion data wasn't being scooped up by the owners.

As of Friday the 31st they have apparently decided to unencrypt the project and make it open source. I will be doing some testing and checking this weekend.

I haven't seen it mentioned here anywhere so I thought I'd bring it up. If by chance this has already been made public, I apologize for the duplicate post.

I am in no way affiliated with this program, but I've heard rave reviews of this script system from some people I trust. It's free. It's now unencrypted. If you believe, like I do, in tracking EVERY penny you spend and earn, this could be a great place to start.

I have installed the old version on one domain just to try to figure out how the software works. It's fairly complex and isn't exactly the most intuitive software I've ever worked with, but it is still very well constructed and once you get the hang of it, it seems to meet it's claims.

You can read the release notes and download it at:

Code:
http://prosper202.com/blog/going-opensource-prosper-111-release-with-emergency-security-release

You'll need to register to download. Just throw in a junk email.

I have not yet actually checked to see that it is unencrypted, nor have I looked for calls home, but I would find it hard to believe that the guys who created this would be stupid enough to leave any nasty business in this version with half the internet marketing world watching them.

Still, use at your own risk.

Enjoy and test EVERYTHING.

Were you aware that they had an important security bug that was found recently on their script?

I know that they were working on a solution to fix this asap.

Don't know if the decision to go opensource has anything to do with this recent problem.

Yes, the bug was caused because they used Zend to encrypt the newer versions. They decided just to go ahead and release the code completely rather than use a different encryption system, so by removing the encryption, they fixed the bug.

I have been using this for a couple of weeks and I'm loving it. Especially the Live View feature.

Pretty cool, but looks like you have to dedicate a domain to (can't so it on a subdomain). Is that correct or did I miss something?

Guess I could just buy a cheap .info domain for it.

I'm using Piwik (piwik.org) which is an open source stats package too. Pretty cool but it doesn't look at robust and complex as Prosper202, so I'm gonna check this one out as well.

If you want something more basic, but also much more intuitive and very easy to use, try Piwik.org (I don't have any relationship with the software or the organization - I just like it and thought others might as well).
