What is the proper way to do a URL redirect to my website with google seeing it as dup content and penalizing me. i tired once but I got hit hard and fell out of google. once i turn off redirect I got back listed in google

use wordpress
install uniquefier plugin
redirect via .htaccess

or should I say how do I redirect via .htaccess and what does the
install uniquefier plugin does?

Goto your cPanel, click on "Redirects", choose a 301 redirect and enter the new location.

Was just about to post the same address as turbotec good job I double checked it.
Worked for me and straight forward just remember to upload the hta access file in ascii mode seems to be quite important

Well for me it was because I had designed some sites with whatever software and it named the pages gpage1.html
When I started using xsp I copied the page content over and added to it but the new page was called for instance newpage.html
So I needed google to send gpage1.html visitors to newpage.html

For duplicate content you can use my Wordpress plugin UniqueIt!, it makes all your contents unique that too without even changing a word in the article, it does all the work in the backend. This can be verified with Copyscape, just upload, activate and check for copies of your site on Copyscape and you'll be amazed to see that no copies are found!! its just for $7 and thts not much to make all your content unique!!
