Is there something I am missing?

We are spending on average $1.8 per download and sell a subscription for $4.99/month (and $50/m)
Our conversion is okay by industry standards at 2% and it makes us about $55 on average MINUS 30% apple tax...

how are similar apps able to work out their unit economics with these numbers (there are many doing this in the health/fitness niche -- which is what we are in) -- how are they acquiring for much cheaper -- their conversion even at 3-5 would help them break even.

If the customer remains a member for over 6 months we can start to see a profit if there is no attrition. FML am I in the wrong business?

It's all about the numbers. The higher your app ranks the more direct downloads you get from the store.

I am trying to rank my app a.t.m. ( different niche though ) and i am paying more than i earn. I am aiming for the top lists though. At that point i have the chance to earn it all back.

The only way to get into those lists is by getting your downloads / ratings which at this moment costs money. In the end i hope to rank it well enough to get direct downloads from the store.

You pretty much need the users now to make a chance in the future.

See it this way; paying $1800 for 1000 users now can get you a position in the store and therefore you will receive 10 direct downloads a day. These are future stats that you can not calculate within your ad expenses.

Currently i am not ranking for keywords specifically. I am trying to rank my app within the "Top new free / Top games" section within my apps category. I am currently only running Google Adwords at an average of $0.32 per US install.

Today I'll be adding another campaign for world wide installs just to boost the downloads. Also on Google Adwords.

That's a pretty low CPI, is it targeted? Secondly, is it lower because you're pushing it on partner network as well -- how's the level of fraud on that? Thanks
