Do we need profile links indexed or just crawled, for the link to our site to count?

I always thought indexed but a lot of spammers I'm meeting recently just use linklicious and tell me they see the boost from profile links as good as if they were indexed. They tell me there is no need to index. I'd like to believe them as it would save me having to make a massive network of 50+ BLE blogs and with a WP Syndicator on each (10 x 50 web 2.0 properties = 500) a massive amount of work.

    What do you guys think?

I normally don't ping my profile links. Just let the spider do the index job.

I honestly don't think it's worth the extra effort to get them indexed. I think getting them crawled should do the job, as long as Google knows that the link is there.

You should ping them at a minimum otherwise a very, very large portion will never even be found. Just be careful not to ping them all at once. I've seen a few sites get sandboxed or danced way down by pinging thousands of links at a time.
