Hey everyone, I am currently working on a project with a couple of guys and someone bought up an interesting question. Should the website have a professional look (eg. Apple dot com) or a quirky look, colourful look? The point that was raised is, a professional website looks expensive and has the potential to deter users as they think it will cost a fortune to unlock features so there is no point in registering.

Out competition has mostly professional looking websites, however ours is very different in terms of functionality (Its better!) so I think the quirky think will work because I plan to have a funny mascot and a little story (So we can try steer away from the technicalities of how the website works, no one can out it into words yet).

Has anyone done any research in this field or have any experience?

    Cheers

Do you have any examples of your idea of a "quirky" site? Our sites are usually more trendy, "edgy" (as our clients like to say) designs that stray from the typical cookie cutter professional path. I like to stand out by being different. But we stress to our clients that we have the ability to design your standard professional or corporate-style site.

Hey, cheers for the reply. I have put together a little demo, however it is very rough and I don't want to make the idea of the website very public yet as we are still in the very early stages.

However, I will try describe my idea. A green website with a purple logo and a robot mascot. Rounded & bubbly edges on all content boxes. This is extremely rough, if you have any ideas I would love some professional tips because I am working with two guys that are extremely knowledgeable about the industry and I have created a couple of wordpress websites. Why they want to work with me an not just do it themselves, I'm not sure. I think its because I am very entrepreneurial an that could come in handy in a big venture.

There is no one way to make a website. All sites can be optimized to perform equally. Bizzare and colorful is good for creative topics like music, design, art. Professional is good for B2B.

Profile your users, find out what relates to them and more importantly get their input! A colorful but professional site could be something like mailchimp. Works very well.

I think you should try to stand out from your competitors and try to be more memorable... If quirky does that, then yes, definitely go with it.

Take a look at friday design inspiration posts from devlounge.net site. They show some of the beautiful web designs which are attractive. In any case try to avoid dark color themes for the sales based sites i.e. amazon, affiliate type of.

I think it all depends on your target audience, how well they would respond to a quirky site. My ole lady has a real quirky offline biz (she sells clothing targeted towards college girls [funky, slutty clothes]), but our website is really subtle and modern.

Place yourself in the shoes of the target and then get you inspiration

i would go with quirky - i do a fair bit of traveling with different airlines and i can tell you i love the quirky cartoon that srilankan airlines use to show their safety video, its the only safety video i remember, so quirky and good clearly works. No reason why it wouldnt work for websites.
