I have had the same issue and from what I understand, your homepage may be receiving a penalty for over-optimization of your targeted keyword.

What is your on page keyword density and your incoming exact anchor text ratio?

there's a line you can add to each page so that google doesn't index them.

You can either add it in robots.txt or if you are using wordpress you can download and install a plugin called robots meta and that can do the same thing for you.

blocking it from showing up in serps wont solve the root of the problem. Another page will just appear and outrank the homepage. I've had this same issue for 4 months until I figured out what was causing it for me.

The highest density of my main keyword is 7.2. Then next is 5.05. Is the 7 too high do you think?

Just keep building quality links to it and it will kick back in.

7% is definitely too high. You should try to aim for 1-3% depending on what % of your incoming anchor text is exact match.

I would use 3% density only if you have a good anchor text variation.

3-5% density used to work but not anymore (this can be outweighed by having high quality backlinks, but I like to prevent problems at the root whenever possible). I had some sites which had random pages outranking my target page, I dropped my density from 3% to 1% and my target pages returned. I'm focusing on increasing anchor text variation now too.

Check out 9th post on this thread by phpbuilt for more information. Hope this helps you solve your problem as it did for me!

Edit: As jon_xx_x mentioned. if you build high quality links, Google will usually remove small penalties such as this. I prefer to have the penalty lifted and remove the cause of the penalty altogether rather than a quick fix, but that's just me. There are plenty of methods to fix this, choose one, do it, and then review your results :)

wow, i didnt know that at all. Getting my density down to 1-3%
is going to be tricky, but i guess its worth it. That being said, does
that mean i could raise the density on the policy and terms of service
page so they get a density penalty? Or would that be a stupid thing to do.

I would say just leave the privacy policy and terms of service the way it is. It will naturally disappear for that keyword once your homepage is ranking again.

A way to reduce keyword density is to use variations of your keyword.

Use google's keyword tool to find some LSI related keywords that make sense in a sentence and mean the same as your current keyword. Then just swap out some of your exact keyword phrases with the LSI ones.

Make sure you keep your exact keyword phrase in the most important areas though, specifically the title, in the h1 and in the first sentence.

I just disallow G to index Privacy policy and terms of service pages. It won't bring any traffic.
