    Hi,
I have a site listed in webmaster tools as http://sitename.com and http://www.sitename.com
Now in the search results it appears as http://sitename.com, but in webmaster tools that show the old version of the site whereas http://www.sitename.com shows the new version.
I have set preferred domain to http://sitename.com as this is the version listed in search results.

Now here lies my problem: I am going to backlink and do not know if it is safe now to backlink to http://sitename.com as that displays the old version of the site in webmaster tools.

Very confused with this, can anyone shed some light on what I should link to?

    Thanks

You need to choose one URL, have the new site on that URL, then redirect the other URL to that URL and link to it. I would choose the non-www since it is in the SERPs so Google prefers it.

If your site appears in search engine without www then set that one as preferred and build backlinks only to non www version of your website. That's safe.

Yes, set proper redirection through your hosting control panel, and set preferred URL in Webmaster Tools.

Make sure that you get new links using the preferred version of URL here after, and just forget about the old version backlinks.

Thank you, I have set a preferred domain in webmaster tools and set up a permanent redirect with htaccess.

My main concern is the preferred domain that I decided to go with is displaying an old preview of the site in webmaster tools dashboard whereas the domain I did not go with is displaying an up to date preview of my site. I hope the preferred domain display picture will update soon.
