I am planning to research some low target keywords to practice my on/off site SEO, here are some questions I hope some one can help me with:

    1. I have searched around here but have not found a definitive awnser to wether using a subdomain will impact the main or subdomain, can any one confirm this ?
    2. Is there other good options besides using a subdomain or buying a new domain that will allow me the freedom of being able to change w/e I need within the site ?
The main reason I am thinking on using a subdomain is because I am able to create an account within my hosting plan and have full access to it, like what I use/install/htaccess/etc.
    3. I am unsure but from the threads I have found, there was no leads that using a subdomain on any of my sites will impact it so I was planning to use subdomains for the keywords I want to target, not sure if I will make a unique name or EM on the subdomain name what do you recommend me ?
    4. Any other advices ?

    Thanks.

Domains are cheap, why not just buy a new top level domain and use that?

Because it will be used for experiments of all kinds and I did rather not waste a penny, which is why I am asking the above questions, however if those are not correct, then yes I might do that.

    Cgimaster,

I couldn't tell you whether when a site get's penalized if its' only the page that fishy tactics were being used or the entire site. In the same vein, it is also unclear (to me) whether a main domain would get penalized or be affected by SEO practices performed on a subdomain.

I would suggest that to play it safe, just purchase another domain name and use that as your sandbox. If you go ahead and practice on a sub-domain and it turns out that it does negatively impact your main domain, the damage can take a while to undo. On the other hand if you buy another domain and you find out later that you could have skipped doing that, you are only out 12 bucks (assuming you only register a domain for a year).

In a nutshell, how much would you lose if something went wrong and you hurt your main website.

Perhaps this video will offer you some ideas on what to do,

    Hope that helps,

TheContentAuthority, indeed, is there a way to view when a site is being penalized and why or for that I would be always keep a close eye to its rank and others factors to know ?

EDIT: pretty interesting video, thanks again, that is pretty much what I am planning expect for the domain option which I am still considering what to do.

As far as I know the only way to tell if your site has been penalized is if you receive direct contact from Google about being penalized. You could also determine by looking at rankings or by checking your SERP placement with thrid party software but that could be a result of other factors (i.e. competition out ranking you) instead of any penalty.

Well as the recent update of Google Algo that emd's are going to be banned, and you are just doing a experiment then i suggest you to do on subdomains or free blogs.
