Hey guys,

So I'm trying to rank for a reasonably hard keyword. Unfortunately my site is no where to be seen in the search results however I'm pretty highly ranked for mistypes of the keyword (I don't have any spelling mistakes in my site).

So the option arises that I can purchase a link off a US state news site for $150 a month, I'm not 100% sure if I get links on the subpages as well, but I'm tempted to buy it.

But will this affect my rankings. If it brings me first in Google, I will make it back in less then 12 hours :)

Hmm, although a PR7 backlink will bring you a lot of juice its still only 1 backlink, how many search results are returned for the keyword?

yes!
but it will reveal it's real power after a few month.

also, there is only one way to find out if it will make your site on of the first results for THIS keyword.
The link will sure increase visitors and your long tail keywords will do much better.

After having obtained many PR7 backlinks for free, I can tell you that a single PR7 backlink alone will not be the magic bullet you are looking for.

The link will be more powerful if:

a) the site is relevant to your site
b) the site has many in-links with the anchor text as your keyword
c) there are less than 50 other outbound links on the site
d) your link is on the home-page
e) your link is contained within a body of text, as opposed to in a footer or blogroll

All these factors can score the link up or down. If they were all in force, then $150 would be a fair price. However, I doubt that many of these factors apply?

Agreed Micallef, $150 is nice if it matches all factors above as Micallef mentioned you will get good SERP with that kind of backlinks. If that site not relevant to your site then it's worth nothing.

Let's say that site has PR7 and got 50 offsite links => pass maximum link juice = 7 / 50 = 0.14 PR / link :) so is it worth? A new site got PR 0.15 by default in the first time google crawl, that's why we make our link farm ;)

I am just wondering how it will be count if buy 10 pr4 links with 50offsite links + 20 pr3 links with 50offsite links + 20 pr2 with 50 offsite links what is new site pr by default?

you think 1 backlink will make you #1 in Google for a competitive keyword? keep dreaming.

i recommend you look at the top 3 sites for that keyword and check their backlinks. i'm sure you'll find quite a bit more than 1 pr7 backlink.

Passed PR = BL page PR x 85% / offsite links

Please note:
1. 85% is depend on big G, it will change whenever big G want ;) Calculate it yourself.
2. Overdo it will make your site penalized by big G, especially new site.

@nam6641: agreed again ;)

Don't waste your money on a PR7 link. There are plenty of free ones out there to grab.

i thought google doesnt care about pr anymore, since they removed the page rank from their toolbar !

theire removed the page rank from the bar? WTF! When did they do this? Hears interesting

Well I do agree with Micallef's statement since I have built myself lots of PR7 links but I disagree with youngguy.

Dude, Link Juice is not calculated this way and NO this will not be quivalent to PR0.14.. :)

PR are totally exponential..... A PR2 link is not equivalent to 2PR1 Links......
And 30 OBL from a PR7 link is definitely better than a 10 OBL PR6 Link.

Yeah you are right, PR's are obviously exponential and I think it's something like a logarithmic scale where it takes a lot more to go from pr6 to 7 than pr5 to 6

Personally I would NOT purcahse the pr7 backlink unless it's a banner on their homepage and will drive significant traffic!

Well the site only has about 5 or so outbound links, so I guess that is rather good and yes it is for the homepage only.

Yea if there was 50 outbound links then I wouldn't bother but there's only about 5.

Nope I don't think it's the magic bullet. I'm sure it will help quite a bit but it won't change everything. My site already has some solid pr 5 -6 backlink from blog commenting and suprise suprise the site in no.1 is only a pr2 and has about 1k backlinks. My site has nearly 500 and I'm trying to get a few more high pr backlinks so I can beat these guys.

And yes I did actually rank second in this keyword early in the year, took about a month or so but the site was already established and had a lot of nice links. But then I sold it and now I'm back to square one. :p

Depends if it is passing link juice or not

I've got a PR7 homepage, there is only 6 outbounds and it's got PR8 ******** backlinks from places like Google.com

I've been selling it for $100 which is normal so $150 is a little too much IMHO unless of course it was going to bring you tons of traffic as well.

PR8 at forum dot joomla dot org

They have a few rules though like you have to show the real url (not a tiny url, not in anchor text, etc). You may also want to look for a post on the site that has high PR as well and reply to it as it is more likely to be an indexed post. ie. a post on a PR2 page on a PR8 site. Links on that forum are do-follow.
