in my search for domains for a private network, very often I come across pr3 pr4 and even pr5 sites that have zero backlinks.
As far as I can tell, the PR is not fake.

I dont get it, how is that possible? and is it recommended to buy such domains?

I'm pretty sure PR will drop at the next update. I think you should pay less attention to PR and more attention to DA/PA and other stats.

I had sites that earned PR 2-3 without any link building just on the fact that google liked it and visitors too. Bu pr5 should be another level and I never seen site without link with PR5

but DA and PA can be artificially raised with spam. I can run scrapebox 24/7 on a domain and raise DA to 40
PR is a measure of how much google trusts a site.

if you were setting up a private network, would you buy a PR0 with high DA/PA ?

If it had quality backlinks, then yeah, sure... PR5 with 0 backlinks is pretty much unachievable.

Either fake, has some crazy redirects, or somehow all the backlinks were dropped. The only other thing I can think of is that the domain is from like 1995 or something.

you can have pr 5 with zero back links. It can be achieved though re direct only. Check the web archive ..u will find the redirect some where..

when you redirect a site its get the other site pr. domain A 301 >> CNN = domain A get CNN's PR
when you remove the redirect and there's no update yet, the PR stays (toolbar PR) until the next.

I bought several low-quality (no backlinks) PR 5 in the past, and very few of the PRs are retained. I might just lucky to have this several PR still intact after several PR updates. This is from my own experience. Others might have different things.
