Hey guys, I've been debating this quite a lot recently with some associates and I'd love to get some BHW input on the subject - and hopefully it'll allow us to all benefit from each others insights!

We all know that it'd be far more beneficial to have 100x seperate PR 5 page contextual backlinks from ONE DOMAIN than 100x seperate PR 0 contextual backlinks from 100 different domains, but how would other breakdowns of PR vs domain diversity fair?

For arguements sake, we'll assume that all of the links are contextual with the same low OBL value, and while the links are contextual they are not highly integrated within the website (for instance, all of the domains are about dog walking and the pages are contextual articles about fitness with do-follow links for the keyword 'fitness training').

But do you think that PR always trumps diversity?
I think most of us would also probably agree that 10x seperate PR 5 page contextual backlinks from ONE DOMAIN would not be as valuable as 10x seperate PR 4 page contextual backlinks from 10 different domains?

Think about it guys, which of these would you rather?

    1. 50x PR5 Contextual Backlinks from 5 domains (10 pages on each)
    2. 50x PR4 Contextual Backlinks from 25 domains (2 pages on each)

Do you think that it's better to have higher PR links from less domains than lower PR links from more domains, or not?

If you disagree with me, please, say it, I want this to be a discussion, I'm not trying to force my views on anyone I'm just interested in what the BHW community thinks!

Since it's PR4 vs PR5, I'd rather have x5 the amount of domains. But if it was PR1, then I guess I'd rather have the PR5 ones :) Only google employees can tell you exactly what the "right" mix is, but as stated all over BHW, diversity, velocity and quality is the key.

    Why not both? :p

But anyways, I'd get the second package simply due to the greater number of links and unique domains.

I know, ideally we should always aim for both :p
But I meant if you were in the position where you had to chose, you would pick having more domains with slightly less PR than less domains with more PR then?

Id go for more diversity with slightly less PR. Keyword here is slightly. If the PR gap is more than 2 PR, I'd probably opt for the higher PR, depending on the number of links.

Diversity generally wins out. High PR pages pass more trust rank, but I'd prefer the volume and IP diversity. It also provides more protection from fluctuation as the link juice is spread over a wider range of links. Especially if you build more volume through tiers.

I'd go for the higher link totals every day at those numbers.

    Vote for more domains.

In my opinion, if some of high PR backlinks are taken down, it will greatly influence the rank your website.

Thats a valid point, you're far more at the mercy of PR updates when you have less diversity regardless of higher PR, if you've got a bunch of high PR links on one website it only takes that to lose a PR rank or two and you lose your link juice!
