I have a site that has hundreds of thousands of static HTML pages. I can set up a way to update them all weekly. Does that have a strong value as far as Google is concerned, or am I just wasting my time?

It's a curiosity of the old basic PR system that when you make a new page on a domain, a very small amount of PR is added.

I don't think it works anymore, but websites used to get higher PR just by virtue of having thousands or millions of pages.

As for just updating static pages with extra content, this won't help you increase PR - it's a completely separate thing.

Google will consider you more for ranking purposes if you regularly update with original content. I don't think you can authomatically update all the static pages with content which the bot is going to love, so I'll say there isn't really any benefit in doing this.

Yeah, the site I have with all those pages is not to act as google bait, it's just because the subject matter is so extensive and we have to list all of the various products.

It all depends by what we mean by "the bot is going to love" as from what I understand, Google Caffeine loves updated content.

So let's just assume for a minute that I can push a button and actually change a considerable amount of the content on all those pages (not just add stuff), shouldn't Caffeine react very positively?

Or maybe not. I just don't know.

If it's cheap / easy then try it.

If there is a big outlay involved, don't bother - or test it over a few months on a handful of pages first.

It's quite involved, but the thing is that it's just about as easy to do it for 100 pages as it is for 100,000 pages. Maybe I've hit (entirely by accident) on the definitive way to game google. I'll tell you one thing... if this works, I am NOT going to be selling "the secrets" in an ebook for $79.95 so every Tom, Dick, and Harry can get all over it. I'm keeping it to myself! :D
