My idea is to have ads out for distantly related or unrelated keywords--
The strategy would be to have so many keywords that you're bound to get impressions, and meanwhile offer a low max cpc like $.05

Imagine it as a newspaper ad- not really specifically targeted to someone but getting in front of a lot of eyes for cheap -- and then still only paying if they click

And these people could of course increase site rank by social signals (pressing like etc)

    What are your guys' thoughts?

Generally speaking unrelated keyword=untargeted traffic --> it's not going to convert well.
If you want to try that, make sure you have tracking tools, google analytic and watch bounce rate. If you can get around 60% or lower it's probably worth it. I dont think you can get 5 cents with adwords/bing though, you can try 7search, advertisingdotcom or other second tiers search engine, watch the click fraud.

If you want them to Like your facebook page, you can use facebook ads/sponsored story, you can get $0.03 cpc, see lukepeerflydotcom / facebook-sponsored-stories-case-study for example.
    You can also use youlikehits.

    PS
    Newspaper ads are not cheap.

It's not a new idea. Lots of people do this already. You will get traffic. The difficult part is to get conversions.

    Few things:

    - Ad placement: marketers place their ads strategically for "unconscious" clicks. Basically, it will increase the ctr due to the ad location, color and other factors. Don't place ads at random, they will just get stupid clicks w/o conversions.

    - Keywords: if you decide to go ahead with your strategy, this is what in my opinion I think it will happen-
A user is gaining knowledge about organic oranges in Florida. They stumble upon your keyword "fast" and they see your advert.
    This is what will happen:
Option 1, and most likely, the user will not even bother in reading the ad.
Option 2, providing that you have a flashy ad which is very visible and attractive, a few of the users will click on it. Why? Because they will click "unconsciously".

My theory is that you will get next to 0 conversions.

Now, that being said, nobody can predict anything until it has been tested, so my suggestion (if you have a budget) would be to go ahead, despite the negative feedback we've given you, and try your method. Who knows, maybe you'll tap into some great money making technique.

Also, I would suggest you bid in related kws, totally unrelated stuff will definitely reduce your chances. So following your strategy, I would opt to do it, however, with a previous research on "related stuff" which your targeted segment will appreciate.

In any case, and whatever you choose to do, best of luck.
