You know how in some forums, when you post a thread, under your user name, there could be an icon, usually the picture of a globe, or a rectangle with the letters www inside it. and that picture is a link to your website?
I am wondering if these help in serps? I would think google figures since these links are definitely made by the same person that owns the site that it is linking to, then it should not count. does that make sense? what i mean, is in your profile, you set YOUR OWN website, you are not going to set someone else's website. linking to your own website = unnatural = should not count. I know this is an awkward way of putting it, i dont know how else to explain it.
recent findings please, I know these worked in 2009 but what about now?

This is actually a good question. However, even if google does not count them, they can still end up leading to direct traffic.
