Let's say I write a great article like "The 5 stupidest people in the NBA." Can I post it to my blog and also submit it to an article directory like ezine? Will the duplication of content hurt the seo value of both?

You will get a different answer depending on who you ask. My opinion is post to your blog, and then wait for it to be indexed by G, then submit to article sites so duplicate penalty only hurts the article.

I do that all the time without bad effects on my site. As srhcom said - have it get indexed on your blog first than submit to art. dir. I am sure there are different schools of thought on this.

The way I understand it is:

Duplicated Content = ACCEPTED by Google
Duplicate Script & Duplicate Content = DENIED by Google

Means that if you host the same exact webpage on two different servers using two different domains, Google will only pick one of them. But if two different article directories or an article directory, blog, and a website all have the same content, Google will index all three.

You have to remember one thing. A free article directory is not meant for link spamming, nor is it meant for the average person to read. It is used by webmasters to pull content off of, word for word, and stick it on their site. This way, they don't have to waste time writing content or money hiring article writers.

If Google did not allow for duplicate content, it would defeat the purpose of these directories and we wouldn't see them online anymore.
