Does anyone else believe that creating your own link pyramid towards your money site is still the way to go?
pyramids are fine but you need other link types for diversity aswell, direct blasting your site with spammy comments is natural even when people say that you should avoid it.
The key is diversity. Don't go crazy and create a bunch of those. Perhaps start with two, then move on to other types of links. Then do something more "whitehat" like guest blogging, etc. Come back to pyramid and so on. That's how I operate right now. Plus, I'm really looking into media buying to not only diversify my SEO, but my traffic, and hence income as well.
I would suggest trying different techniques BUT allow a few days between each to monitor results e.g see what is working. If you do everything at once you cannot nail down what is effective.
well i mean i had a site hit by penguin that was in top 3 for a highly competitive keyword. I changed keyword density and built a link pyramid. That was basically it.
Anchor text and link diversity are the two most important things post penguin. I would recommend high PR blog comments with natural looking links as well as 2.0s, and for bigger money sites, microsites. You can of course supplement those higher quality links with low quality spam, but unless you want to be creating a new batch of sites every month (which is a perfectly viable business model) you need to have some quality on top of spam.
