Hello!

I was wondering if it is possible to keep the exact same website that you have, but use a different domain to access it. The old domain would then be forwarded to the new one.

For example, I have a website called 123.com. I want to ditch 123.com and go with abc.com, but 123.com has a pretty valuable search ranking position.

Is it possible to move the entire site to abc.com but keep the same rankings or will they all be pretty much lost?

I've done a lot of work building links to this domain so I may just keep it as is, however I'm still interested learning more about the process.

Thanks!

I have literally just done exactly this. So I'll let you know in a few days :-)

Anytime I've done a redirect, I lose the ranking for a few days. Then it resumed the ranking position with abc.com.

@CjTheFish i did the same last year. My site was at 3rd page when i switch the domain. What i did bought a new one and transfer all the content in to it. Old domain set as permanent redirect to the new one. I didn't achieve the rank quickly it took time. After 2-3 months later (didn't remember the exact time) my new site start getting impression and rank on SERP. Within 4 months i got 2nd page ranking for the new domain. Here please note i started link building for the new domain as well. So its matter of time depends on many things like keyword competition, link value and all. But you can gain it surely :)

The way I done it was this-

Bought new domain
Changed DNS servers to my hosting
Added new domain as addon domain in my existing cPanel and changed the directory to match my existing site
Updated the URL in Wordpress using velvet update URL plugin (which updates references in attachments and such)
Updated URL in wp settings
Created a 301 wildcard redirect in cPanel for old -> new domain
Submitted URL update request in webmaster tools

Now I'm tracking my keywords on the old and new domain.

It is also on page 3.

I'll update you guys once I see results.

it will take 2-4 week to get ranking back, but ranking will decrease a bit.

Perfectly possible, you will be at the rankings of old domain "more or less". You may have to send few new backlinks to this new domain. As also inform google through WMT.
