You wouldn't really get any serious clients. The only clients you would probably get are those who are like the same as you, who want to avoid speaking personally. How many people do you think would be comfortable spending a heap of money with the trust email?

You can always hire people to sell and service their own accounts. I spent many years selling on the phone. I feel your pain I'm over talking on the phone as well.

This would be very hard to manage. A lot of businesses are not just going to send you money in the same way that people online do.

Very difficult. Not impossible, but very difficult. I was pretty shy at first, but after meeting up with two potential clients (unfortunately, I didn't close them), I pretty much got over the fear. You'll get over it too.

You're probably limited to freelancer sites like Elance and Guru where you are competing with 100 others for the same $5 an hour. I'm sure you don't want to do jobs like that forever.

If your serious about making money, you need to pick up the phone. There's nothing better than interacting with your clients over the phone/verbally to try to push a sale.

If your shy to pick up the phone, you need to practise talking to people. I work as an Operations Manager and talk to 20-50 different clients per day. At the start it can be very overwhelming, but in time you will build your confidence both over the phone and in person.

I would suggest doing a G search for 'phone etiquette' and having a read of some of the resources on there.

    Hope this helps.

If you are truly serious about making money for your SEO business, then you need the power of the phone. Keep at it, and you will get better in time OP.

One of the most valuable assets to have in any business is sales experience.
I'm talking about face to face interaction with people, not just over the phone.
I worked in sales for 2 years, and it has helped me immensely in my SEO business.
Like thedon said. It's something you need to get over. Otherwise you'll need to hire someone.

I think it depends on what you plan to offer. If it's something like creating 200 social bookmarks for $6, than you probably can avoid to talk to someone on the phone. Most people understand that they can't expect some kind of premium customer service for something which costs only $6.
But if you offer a seo campaign for $600, it will be hard to explain to your customers why they can't talk to you by phone.
But maybe it's a possibilty for you to JV with someone who's willing to do the customer service part.

with anything...it takes practice to build yourself up. I have several out of state SEO clients but I had to pick the phone up to get them. It's not always easy..kinda like going to the gym...soemtimes it's hard to get the desire to go but once I'm in there..I feel so much better.

Keep it going..If this is what you want...don't let a little phone get in your way.

If you need any scripts for SEO..PM me.

    Take care

I understand what you are saying. I do 99% of my work via email but do offer phone access to existing clients.

I think that you should get into the habit of establishing a relationship with the person via phone (unless they email you or first establish it online). Once you better understand then, let them know that you are going to move communication to email so that there are records of design request and so that you can promptly respond to them.

Make them think that email access will result in faster communication. And deliver upon that promise as well even if it means responding to something at 11PM.

Many businesses will like the first face-to-face or webinar meeting but as the project is being designed, email will work for most of them are they too are busy and spend a lot of time on the phone.

If talking is a fear, relax and be yourself. If you need practice, call random people (not clients) and ask them questions. This will get you use to talking to people while not turning off your existing list of clients. Call and ask people stuff that you are familiar with and allow it to turn into a conversation. Do not try to sell anything. You are doing this for experience.

Go into a partnership with someone who can sell and you do the seo work.
You will definitely not be taken seriously without taking calls and choose someone who is not internet savvy.
Simply train them to talk the talk, the rest is then up to you.

You need to have real conversations with real business owners to make real money. If you limit yourself you limit success and and potential business.

I think people around here forget that to a lot of businesses, SEO seems like smoke and mirrors and people trying to sell it can come across like they're selling snake oil. There's an inherent mistrust because they often just don't understand and let's face it, some SEO stuff is weird.

Being a decent sales man is really essential to being successful in SEO (and most business). You need to be able to put people at easy and get them to trust you about something they really don't understand. It's hard to get that trust without using a phone.

BUT, you can hire a sales man who works on commission or a partner of some kind. If you're skills are technical, but lacking in the interpersonal department, there ARE ways around it, but you'll likely need help.
