I live in NYC. I've had a problem with people stealing mail and packages that are left on my porch. They stole a piece of mail with one of my credit cards in it and I had to go through the headache of disputing all the charges and stuff.

I recently ordered a laptop from Amazon that was supposed to require signature, but apparently it was "delivered" and no where to be found. I assume UPS just left it on my porch for easy access to low-lives. It could be that UPS was wrong on the estimated delivery date and I still may get it. I already spoke to Amazon and they're looking into it.

    But if it was stolen...
Is there any way for me to find the location of that laptop? I know that if you report a new cellphone stolen, the phone company can lock it up so who ever has it can't use it, is that possible for laptops? Because I'm really thinking of filing a police report or something.

If you install software you could locate the IP, activate the cam, get screenshots and more. Since you did not have it in your procession I think that option is out. But, what came to mind while reading your post is something simple like a cam. One with proper resolution and setup will tell you exactly who and at what time stole from you.

Im not sure I understand what you mean. You're saying the camera on the laptop itself, or an outside camera that could catch who ever it is?

You can install software on your laptop so when it gets stolen you can use the webcam of the laptop, amongst other things. Since you never had it you probably did not install such software and the laptop is gone. To stop people stealing from you, you install a webcam and some software, google it, and now your webcam turns on when somebody steps up your porch, it takes video or pictures, as you wish, and emails it instantly... ~EDIT: some open source software will do: http://www.ispyconnect.com/

Amsterdammer, OP can't install any software because OP didn't ever touch laptop or unpack it even.

Adam, file a police report. I hope Amazon will compensate you.

I see. I probably will set up some sort of webcam like that then. It shouldn't be too hard.

Do you think there's a way for either Amazon or Asus (laptop i ordered) to track it or disable or something like that?

If the sig was required and they didn't get yours, its their problem, not yours. Tell them you want a replacement.

Nope you can't do nothing to track the computer. Even if you would ever had some tracking software in it the thieves can just change the harddisk and it would all go to waste. Sorry for your loss, though lets hope it just have not arrived. Shouldn't the tracking say delivered if they already did or is that only for signed packages?

If I was in your case I would lodge a police complain asap. Many a times companies will not tell you these small details and when you dispute they will ask you if it was stolen why you did not charge a police complain? It at least happens in my country don't know about yours.

I know. :( I also mentioned it twice but the OP did ask if it was possible, and it is. :) Now to edit my former post and give him some software to set up this webcam security system. For free even.

It shows that it was delivered, but no one signed for it. I'm pretty sure that Amazon requires signatures for computers.

    1 Get balloon.
2 Get chickenshit or other suitable material.(fecal matter, oil, paint, be creative), thin it down with water until you have a nice thin slurry.
3 Get sewing needle, scotch tape, shipping tape, and a box big enough to put the balloon in.
get stout thread and thread needle with 2 foot of hanging thread
4 Fill balloon with fecal material or whatever, inflate balloon with something other than your mouth, (I suggest a rubber hose).
5 Tie off balloon, and tape needle to balloon so that the middle of the needle is held in place but the curvature of the balloon keeps the point away from the balloon skin. (Important, do not tape the needle until the balloon is inflated.)
6 Pass thread thru crack in box seams and carefully lay balloon into box, needle towards the bottom the box. Leave enough thread to lift out the balloon, but just barely then tape the thread in place with shipping tape. Fuse length is important, too short and it will go off mainly in the box, too long and they may snap to the triggers function.

**DO NOT PUSH ON BALLOON - I am warning you! Use a large enough box.

7 Tape package shut and address it like it is being sent off, or to your self if you want them to think it was delivered, and set it carefully on the porch.

When your thief opens the box and takes out the balloon, the needle will dig into the balloon as soon as the string becomes taught, bursting it and "marking" your thief with whatever "dye" you choose. hopefully his car as well.

8 Chuckle like hell when it gets stolen.

9 Watch closely for smelly, oily acquaintances.

Amazon customer service is second to none, that's how they got to where they are today. Rest assure they'll take care of you. UPS driver is to blame if he didn't get the sigs that he was suppose to. When everything gets tracked down, they will find out who dropped the ball.

Sorry to hear that you live in such a shitty neighborhood.

@sldebo: Just get a box and put a stone in it for weight, maze for bears is available in the USA. Attach weight to rope to press maze cannister, attach rope to box so when the box is lifted the maze gets sprayed. For extra points you could set a cam on it and upload to youtube. I am not really into that sort of thing though, just recording and getting them arrested seems so much better somehow. :p

I just saw that Amazon actually DOES NOT require signatures for deliveries. That's honestly pretty stupid on their side. This laptop was $1200.

Just spoke to Amazon again. This representative was more helpful. She said if they cant locate the package by the 25th, theyre going to issue a refund. Im just going to buy my laptop at a store. If i get robbed on the way to my car I guess its just not meant to be lol.
