I was thinking of adding a pop-up to my site.

Just wondering, does google see this as bad?

I added a pop-up to one of my sites just about 2 months ago - so far rankings have remained the same. Site is 3 years old. I come across sites quite often that are ranked highly and have a pop-up to sign up for a newsletter etc. so I assumed that it did not hurt anything. Like everything though I'm sure there are a ton of variables that go into it, so while it may not hurt some sites I don't think it's a guarantee that it won't hurt yours.

I think a popup will be the least of your problems. If you find that your site is under manual review it might become something that they would take into account, but I think you may already have other more pressing issues if your site has been flagged for a review. I'm no Google expert, but that just seems to make sense to me. I also have seen too many top ranking authority sites to count have pop ups on their home pages, so I would think this does not negatively affect ranking or SEO

If the popup was annoying as hell and drove people away then I think it would definitely affect your rankings. Google knows if a user goes to your site, goes back to Google, and goes to another site. If enough people do this your site will most likely drop in the rankings. But if the popup does something useful, like displays a log in form, or otherwise doesn't drive people away I don't think it will be an issue.

I don't think an email popup will matter especially if it doesn't show the second time if you close it once.

A lot of sites do it and it works fine. However, annoying popup ads on every page load will definitely hurt your site.
