I just launched a forum (vBulletin) for a software product that I launched some time ago.

We have a very large number of users of our software, all of which have been automatically registered as users on the forum and a notification has been sent out to them letting them know it's now live.

However, there is really NOTHING worse than an empty forum...even with a large, healthy userbase, it's going to be difficult to get any of them to "make the first move" and start to get the ball rolling.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to start getting the forum populated with RELEVANT posts, questions, comments in the appropriate categories of my new forum.

Ideally, I'm looking to pay for a service of real people to get the job done or at least started. My second choice, that I really don't want to go with but will if I have to, would be some kind of software.

Does anybody have any experience with actually USING a "pay service" to have real people come in and begin populating my forum with real, relevant content?

I'm not afraid of spending money, so any suggestions at all are helpful to me, regardless of cost.

EDIT: I put this in "blogging" because it's about the closest forum that made sense to me to put this in.

You could provide incentive offers like membership upgrade when they post useful stuff or contribute to the forum.

Hire 2 - 3 guys and ask them to scrape QA from yahoo answers related to your niche and populate ur forum with the questions as thread topic and answers as posts.

Apart from this, in DP you can get guys who post for 0.10 cent per thread.

Postloop is a really good paying service to use. They screen their posters, and you can pick what level of posters you want to use for your forum.

Amazon Turk and Microworkers services have people who will post on your forum for a few pennies per post.

This is without question something we already planned on doing, thanks for bringing it up :) I'm looking for a much faster & more immediate solution however

Thanks BB, I appreciate it, that's a solid direction for me to head in. I really would much rather pay people than try to use a software. I never thought I'd say it...but...I may be forced to...head over to...D....P...eughk, that was hard.

Awesome man, thanks. Just checked out their site, looks pretty legit. I will definitely be giving them a shot.

Again, thanks for a solid direction to head in.

To each of you guys, thanks a lot. I was hoping to get specific services/ideas to try out and those all fit the bill. I think between these answers alone I'll be good to go. Much appreciated!

I'll also come back and update my thread in the future with what kind of results I got from each of the services/methods I try out.

Amazon Turk and Xrumer should do the trick. The hardest thing might be learning how to use Xrumer. But I think that should solve your problem.

You can get posters from freelancing sites (especially oDesk) too. They'll charge few cents per post.

I ended up signing up at PostLoop & depositing $50 which gets me 500 points. Their 7 day average is 1.44 postloop points gets you 1 post, so using that average that would get me around 340 posts for an average of $0.14.

Seems like that is about around 33% to 50% more expensive than DP or MicroWorkers, but if it works out that it's as easy as it SEEMS that would be well worth it....I didn't have to interview anybody and I don't have to deal with paying somebody and them not delivering or something.

I'm crossing my fingers here though, as I've never used them before (clearly). Let you know how it turns out.

You get points for rating posters, don't 1 rate someone, I did and was messaged by a mod and was threatened. I called them out on this thread, explain the user told me to fuck off randomly before rating and threatened to attack my site and no response...

The advantage you have of using Postloop over DP, etc, is that you don't have to interview the posters, worry about them posting crappy threads all over the place in order to make their money, and post one or two worded phrases such as "Good Post!".

I used them in the past and had a good experience with the quality. And as I said above, you can limit who can sign up on your forum by choosing posters with a rating system from (I think) 1 to 5 (5 having the strongest language skills).

I have been using PostLoop to populate comments on one of my blogs.
    A) TOP Quality. Seriously, Postloop has a nice moderation queue.
    B) Super cheap and fast. I have tried microworker sites but they need far too much control/direction and the content is usually very crap.

Overall, I had a good experience with postloop. Be sure to encourage your postloopers to participate by giving them a point bonus.
Also, depending on the niche you might find it hard to find suitable postloopers.

Building a community takes time, but you can help it along easily. Post relevant questions yourself and then get searching for dedicated people to help you out. Depending on the niche you could pay people to post to populate the forum and then start advertising in on CL, backpage etc in the community section looking for moderators to help you out. It is also a good idea to ask your friends to help post.

Before I found BHW, I used to do forum postings.
Postloop is good as they really filter out low quality posters.
Fiverr has some good posters too.

From a poster's perspective though, depending on your software, it would be quite hard to provide informative posts since the poster has no idea what your software is about. Even if you have a trial software available, unless the poster sees value in it, he/she wouldn't be able to provide informative posts because he'she wouldn't take time to learn it (lots of easier forums to tackle)

No to automated software for this. Depending on the type of community, it's easy to spot automated posts especially on a new forum. And its a turn off.

Yes to games and contests with prizes for upgraded membership etc because the real users would see value in helping out the community.

Yes to forum owner or representative popping in every once in a while to provide tips, tricks, etc. Forum communities love that. Just look at when DD posts something here. Same thing on all forums.

My best bet would be to get a VA to learn the software and answer technical questions and provide tips. Might cost more but better than a bunch of posters posting questions to each other that they know nothing about and care nothing about. Of course, everything depends on what software you use and how hard it is to use and if there are others like it, etc.

Noob posters post just to increase post count. Intermediate posters post informative posts and experts engage other users.

    ==========================
Just want to tell you about a strategy used by a former client. Forum was dying and got sold and he bought it because the community had potential. He hired posters on fiverr. He hired all of them no matter what their rate was (He didn't tell me but I figured it out since some of the posters used the same names they used in fiverr lol) and then one by one, he weeded out the bad posters ( I realized this because I was still being hired but some of the posters had stopped posting). Initially, the community didn't like it. They knew something was going on but since the owner also started contests, they thought the increased forum activity was due to that. After a couple of months, forum activity was high again at this point but he still hired posters (just a couple though) just to keep it going.
    =========================================

If you want it on autopilot then interview a VA to do the initial interviews and weeding out bad posters and checking the work of the posters. When I worked as a poster, I always sent out an excel sheet containing the posts I made and the URL to those posts and my username for the owner/rep to check.

Also, this process is if your software is complicated, technical or a bit hard to use. If it's a no brainer, then postloop might work.

I just realized how unrewarding my online job was before I found BHW. LOL. Now I'm like this.:playingfi

I would go for a competition (pick some gift related to your forum). advertise your forum on social media, and the one with the most quality posts will get the gift. (i would go for 3 gifts so people get motivated in case they cant catch the 1st)

Also lock some features and make them visible after 50-100 posts( optional) so people get 1 more motive to post.
at my forum i am unlocking avatar after 10 posts, so people have a motive to post.

Quality content is a MUST. write write write (let some topics uncovered also, so people make questions)

Answer to all of their questions or have someone to do it for you

Don't forget your friends. challenge them to ask you difficult/ fancy questions but not tell you with what user they do, so you have a motive to answer and also it will be original questions and your answers will not be fake because you don't know if its your friends or some visitor. (it is funny and have result)

Cross your fingers and sit back.

    Good luck.

    Leobar.

PS. if someone got any more suggestions (not software but natural "tricks") please post , i am very interested on it too. TX in advance
