Popular domain registrar and not getting banned

Hey guys, it's often said that one shouldn't buy expired websites from small registrars for pbn purposes as they are easily identified by google and leads to a ban. Everyone says that you should use a mix of common registrars, which is plausible. What would happen if I bought from a single registrar and got all my backlinks from there though? Would that stop my traffic-ranking growth and lead to a ban in the long term?
