There are platforms on which you can create a blog generating a lot of traffic as a whole domain eg. wordpress, jimdo etc. There are also platforms which generate almost no traffic at all eg all4webs. Is it also worth bulding links on lower tiers on such poor web20 platforms or it might rather harm my ranking strategy?

Use that poor web2.0 for your Tier 2 instead.

If you build a new blog on wordpress.com it will not get traffic purely from existing on that domain. The value is in the fact that it has a high Domain Authority. If all4webs has a higher domain authority than your site, there is still value in building links from that network assuming they are ******** links.

DA is just a metric and doesn't mean shit. Wordpress itself generates lots of traffic what means when you create a blog then it can be relatively easy to rank. If all4webs generates barely 100 unique visitors a month it means if you create a blog it will not rank shit. It is simply too much spammed with poor content and too many backlinks poiting to it.

However in terms of using such platforms on Tier2 in order to pass some link juice I am not sure and also curious others' opinions. I dare to think that a backlink from such a platform will not bring any juice to your tier 1 link and may get you sandboxed if you use too many of them however I might be wrong :)

I agree with OP. The only reason when i go for webs 20 with low traffic (do not go for these that do not have traffic - theres something wrong with them!) is when they offer a subdomain instead of a folder

wow. if "fresh " web.20s with "nothing in their behind" sticking would rank anything with the fuckiest competition, I would have used 100s in the past..

    ^^ this

OP if you think that the "traffic" you are getting in your Wordpress analytics are real visitors, then uhm, nope. Just bots counted as actual UVs. Your fresh web 2.0 will rank higher (as a rule of thumb) if you use stronger platform, but that's about the only benefit that you will get.

Poor web2.0 platforms, no traffic but there is still value in building links if it's high Authority websites

Hey Nargil, I meant something different. If we have 2 blog platforms: all4webs and wordpress - we can assume that both have hundreds of blogs created on them by random users. Wordpress itself generates around 2MLN traffic and all4webs only 100 according to ahrefs. Since at least some part of this 2MLN on wordpress is generated by web20 blogs we know this platform is liked by google. On the other side if we create a blog on all4webs we will not rank shit. The reason for this is probably because it is mainly used by seo guys to generate backlinks + it is spammed with other backlinks. Now the question is if I start getting backlinks on T2 from such poor domains:
    1. They will bring some value in terms of link juice to my T1 links
    2. They will be totally neutral
    3. They might harm my T1 links and eventually the MS

    What do you thin guys?

Ah so. So you meant the default traffic of entire platform. In that case:

    1. They will still bring value, no need to worry.
    2. Definitely won't be neutral. It's a link from quite big platform and unless you use some yesterday made random platform nobody has ever heard of, there will be a benefit.
    3. Almost non existent chance they will hurt your site, unless you use kind of web 2.0s mentioned in the previous answer.

There are dozens of web 2.0s that are decent and can be used for link building no problem. I don't really think that you will need more than just these quality ones.
