Ive been thinking recently about the most efficient use of time and figured it might be helpful to get some feedback. Is it worth investing more time to gain a position for a higher traffic keyword, or is it more profitable to simply target more smaller ones?

So how many searches do your keywords you choose to target usually have? I know this can depend on a lot of other factors but generally as the number of searches increases so does the competition.

I've got sites ranking in many of those ranges.

There is a link between searches and money earned but it's not a full correlation.

For example, I hold high positions for a 200/month kw and a 60/month kw. I make 10x more money on the 60/month kw.

Why? It's down to the nature of the keyword. Almost everyone in the 60 kw searches with intent to purchase, a higher proportion than on the 200 kw.

What matters most is something on which you just have to make a judgement call - what proportion of people searching for your are actually planning to / may be convinced to perform the action you want?

I agree with what your saying here. I Have a pretty high ranking page for a pretty big farmville search and one site that ranks highly for a smaller finance related search and guess which one makes the most?

I personally feel that its better to spend time and hunt for small untargeted, well converting keywords than try to rank for big searches.

On a low traffic keyword you can easily get a couple of top positions just from article writing/web 2.0 sites. Then a money site in there as well and youve covered the search results.
