    Hey guys,

This might be a silly question, but I also think this question will bring up many responses as well as some interesting debates :)

    So the question is:

Can you call someone you met on some kind of chat software, like Skype, a friend?

What do you think, guys? Or would the term "acquaintance" be more correct to say?

I'm not saying that you can't tell someone is yuor friend, as I have called many people friends, and I also have been called a friend.

    Let's the rresponses begin! :D

In my opinion, yes. You can call someone you've met online a friend even if you've never met them.

Yeah i would call them friends. ive personally met some people that i first got to know online, also people ive met online have helped me out financially while never actually meeting them in person, i certainly consider these as friends. I also know 2 people who met online and now live together as a couple. Not on a dating site or anything like that lol.

Hell yeah! I have a few that do book exchanges with me, some that help me out when I'm doing poorly and I help them out. One of my online buddies straight sent me a computer monitor, I paid 30 for shipping lol. You meet good people online, and most of them can understand your technical issues to since they're familiar with computers. Hard to talk to real life friends about technical issues.

I would definitely call someone I've only met online as a friend. But sometimes it's really hard to think that there's an actual human being behind the other screen, and not just some virtual computer or whatever.

Just think about it, we're really over 500.000 real people on this forum. It's amazing :D

    Yes you can!

    Definition of friend:
A person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of sexual or family relations.

No. I would call the acquaintance, most of the people I know IRL I think of them as acquaintance, the reason is that I rarely trust any one (except the Black Hat community and the InfoBarrel) community.

Also, a friend doesn't turn back on you.
    Experience.

Dude look up some of those pen pal meetings on youtube. Those people formed life long friendships and in some cases relationships with people they knew online for years before they actually met. So yes, the answer is 100% yes.
