    COICA

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media copanies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed form the internet and not just in the US.

Please see the following article from the Huffington Post for more information.

    Stop the Internet Blacklist

And if you are a US citizen, please take the time sign this petition
DemandProgress.org - Petition to Stop the Internet Blacklist!

    UPDATE:
Tell Your Senator: No Website Blacklists, No Internet Censorship!

Update: On September 30, 2010, the Senate Judiciary Committee postponed the scheduled markup of the Internet censorship bill — a fantastic outcome, given that the entertainment industry and their allies in Congress had hoped this bill would be quickly approved before the Senators went home for the October recess. Massive thanks to all who used the EFF Action Center to write to your Senators to oppose this bill.
This gives the public more time to remind legislators why any bill that interferes with the infrastructure of the Internet is a bad idea. This bill will be back soon enough, and Congress will again need to hear from concerned citizens like you. So stay tuned to EFF.org for new developments!

I appreciate your confidence in that matter. I guess many felt the same way about the ban of online gambling "not happening" in the US.

yup, we hear this stuff all the time. I doubt that it will ever happen in the true sense of the word censorship. They are simply just trying to prevent movie, music, and software pirating from spreading. The sites and groups of people who are against this are usually torrent site owners and pirates.

If they were in fact trying to censor the internet in the form of oppressing knowledge like in China or Vietnam, then there will most likely be a 100 million man/woman/teen/tween march on Washington to protest.

p.s. If you live in Vietnam and try to research what Democracy is, you'll be heavily fined and be put in jailed for some time and have to go to reeducation camp/school. I know because it happened to my uncle who tried to to research what it is.

nah, the government will get a hold of it, I mean honestly and silly as it may seem...but regulating the internet is very very very easy, once the US government passes a Law that search engines can't index copyright material that's called Ball Game, if google doesn't allow you to show up then what? look at it like this...if we invaded a country for oil, and lied about it and still stayed over there killed thousands of innocent people...why in the hell do u think some how the internet is waaaay to advanced for the government to take hold of.

The reality of it all is like this, they made people dependent on FREE FREE FREE! once u make someone dependent on something that they can't live without, because it was always given to them for free, u will eventually take it away, and make them pay for it same reason senuke gives u a 7 day trial, and GUESS WHAT! u will buy whatever is put in the stores u know why cause u a crack fein to FREE!

It's called being a great hustler, give it to u for free or in the US Government case..WE ALLOW! THIS TO GO ON! "We can stop it at any time we wish" but there's a purpose for us to allow it, we want u dependent on it, because when we tell u you now have to pay for it, YOU WILL! and u will accept it. and like it. Another thing, I hate the US government myself personally..But if u for 1 moment think they can't regulate the internet SHIIIIIITTTT! think again.

Yep, the comment "censor like Iran and China do" is BS. They've actually killed people for making porn in Iran. But these type of bills hardly ever pass, I'd bet this one doesn't pass either.

This is not going to pass. If it does, I'm moving to Europe :)

This is just another desperate attempt by the entertainment industry to make money.

well from what you stated that rules out copy-written material. OK so? you cant have it!, Thats a no brainer anyways. Its illegal! if you cant make a living without peddling illegal material well then your ass was skinned from the start. you cant build a business like that. You cant be mad that there cleaning up illegal material online and your junk site happens to be one of the victims. IMHO

That's not the point. It has nothing to do with the business owners. They will literally be blocking sites i.e. the pirate bay, youtube, sidereel because the have copyrighted material. The music industry thinks they can just go in and censor the internet, but that notion in and of itself is wrong. They do not and should not have the authority to block, ban, remove, or prevent anything online. They need to change their business models to adapt to modern forms of consumption rather than trying to make this hyper controlling communist bull shit into a law. If this law is passed (which it won't be, even if it did it would probably be vetoed by obama anyways) Black Hat World may be blocked because let's be honest, the downloads section is not copyright free at all.

There going to be blocking almost every site they dont like including this one.... Industry is getting greedy..

Say u have a blog and post a pic of a new chevy car. He your website can be block for posting copyright material ..

    It gets ugly.

Alot of you are looking at this and thinking torrent and warez site who cares.

But its much larger then this wayy larger.. They already said Youtube will be the first to be blocked, especially since they lost their fight with Youtube

The ONLY good thing about them targeting youtube is that it is owned by Google, who has VERY deep pockets. They will not just bend over and take it.

Ok, here is where this gets scary.........

    Where does this stop?

THAT, is the part that is where I draw the line. You have to look at the big picture, not what "they say"......once the "backdoor" access becomes law, who then, decides what is and is not to be blocked or censored?

Does everyone see where this is going?
