    Hi ,

I've recently been doing some email marketing on behalf of a client, but while I was sorting some files, my computer got in a bit of a rut and I lost my temper and started bashing buttons.

In the meantime, I had his huge mailing list open in excel and I cleared all the sells and saved the motherfreaking file. I tried to go back to a previous restore point but there weren't any. What the hell can I do to retrieve his mailing list guys? Any help will be hugely appreciated, man I really need a drink right now. :(

    The answer is obvious.

You have to kill your client.

All this talk about retrieving the file is really just wasting time before you inevitably have to kill him so just get it over with.

Use an icicle - no evidence.

@blackescobar: Are you using Windows? Try windows restore point, that might help.

    This might help too.

Otherwise you can always say that
    - someone stole your laptop when they broke into your car or
    - lightning busted your laptop AND backup.

@black101 , he put up a link sharing a file from his google docs and I downloaded it straight from there. He will have the original but I need to have the work done for him by monday, I know he's already on business this weekend and has taken the original link down and I'm unable to contact him, if the work isn't done by monday I'm pretty fucked tbh. Is there a way to access the original downloaded file perhaps somewhere on my computer? I know the file folder in "downloads" has automatically been updated thanks to me screwing up but maybe I'm guessing there might be some trace of the original content somewhere surely. Thanks.

There is no way to recover from clobbering the file. If you had deleted it you'd have a shot, but overwriting is precisely how you make sure the file is unrecoverable.

There's this magic word I learned years ago after I lost an important programming job: BACKUPS, BACKUPS, BACKUPS. CD's are cheap, back things up to CDROM, HD's are cheap, back things up to external HD's.

Microsoft has given 2 keys know as 'Ctrl' + 'Z'. Even if you saved the file, if your file was still open, you could have pressed these keys to undo the changes. It works fine even after saving the file.
But, if you have closed the file, then it will be of no use.

@dbdnvikas , no I haven't got it back yet, unfortunately, I just mean that I'd literally only just restarted my computer when I read aout ctrl-z , it's something I always usually use too but in the mess I didn't even think of that, bad times lol.

P.S No idea how it happened, but I was closing everything down and closing my tabs for the night when I saw a file restore box showing the date of the original file, WTF?!! There wasn't any previous versions available beyond 2 days ago and I've no freaking idea where this came from but it allowed me to restore to last week and... PROBLEM SOLVED! FUCKING RESULT!

Yes I hacked your computer out of pity and ran my BartoRecover app, which is where that dialog came from. Glad I could help.
