I have finally decided enough is enough, I can't do a whole lot with my mac, and I've decided to go get a new laptop. I considered running parallels and thought it would be just a waste of time. My mac is about 2 1/2 years old anyway, can anyone recommend a decent laptop I could go pickup for $400.00 or less??!! I have this thing called UNDerground at my school where people can sell stuff, and found some decent stuff can anyone check these links out and let me know if its worth the money? Or also suggest say a few laptops at BestBuy that I could pick up. Thanks...

Would offer this person $400 or less, kind of old.

what size laptop are you looking for? i can personally recommend the acer aspire one if you are looking for a small, lightweight laptop for under $400 brand new. its the only thing i take to class with me (also, i'm graduating soon and could care less about my grades right now, heh)

its not for everyone, but i love the thing

I would prefer somthing over 13" I'm not to picky I just dont want a huge ass laptop ya know...I'm basically just going to run programs off it for all my marketing needs, so in all honesty I pry could just buy a piece of crap laptop, but figured I might as well get a decent one in case i ever wanted to dick around and play a game on it or somthing..

the one in the first link has good specs, but I have heard vista is just horrible.
the one in the 4th link sounds good, but unless you can inspect it i would be weary and again I think vista has to many problems.

as for bestbuy i looked up under or close to $400 laptops and i think this one is good
    Compaq - Presario Laptop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ X2 QL-60 Dual-Core Processor

    Model: CQ50-215NR | SKU: 9027698 - $450

    Toshiba - Satellite Laptop with AMD Turionâ„¢ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-60 - Onyx Blue Metallic

    Model: A215-S5837 | SKU: 8771322 - $399

i think you should get something with dual core and over a gig or 2 of mem and a decent size HD.

I went to Best Buy a bit around Christmas, they had like 20 laptops ranging from $499ish (maybe it was $399ish?) to $1,600 or more. They had lots of them. I'll be honest though, I was on LSD so I might be wrong(ish). The lower the price the worse the graphics card, if you plan on playing older games that require OpenGL (older) get a laptop with XP.

I went to wally world (wal-mart) this week looking at their baby-sized netbook by acer and they were all out of them. 8.9" screen seemed cool but they were pretty dinky.. the guy told me they had a regular size (around 15") acer for $50 more ($348) so I bought that instead.

After I got rid of the default install crap and changed my vista theme to XP, all is well. Fast, decently light, I dig it considering I've heard bad things in the past about acer computers. Its got like 3gb of ram, 1.6ghz amd processor, 160gb hd I think.. pretty much all u need for anything but gaming.

Might check the spec on the toshiba mentioned above b/c they are really good laptops.

Ya it is and I was going to run parallels but I cant find any copies of Xp, only vista, so thats why i almost would just rather buy somthing new that has more ram etc. Ram for Mac is rediculously expensive. Idk

aspire rocks, cheap lightweight, powerful and cheap again. Acer has improved alot in this model, the speakers are good, not like the crappy older models. And you can manage a few games on it, esp if you have 2gb+ ram on it.

Don't go for a used one, when it craps out, no warranty, and you're fucked. You can extend the Acer aspire warranty to 3 yrs for cheap(at least in my country). That means, you're guaranteed to have a working lappy for 3 years.

I'm using vista on aspire, so far no probs, fast and nice. Go for AMD X2, those are real powerful chips.... but abit hot, although, you can turn down the CPU power.

If you want to save more, leave out windows license, and dl a torrent.

I'm about to buy a laptop as well :)

If you can go a little over your budget, go for a new Intel-based Mac, and run Boot Camp. That's what I do, and even though I rarely have to boot into Windows, it's still there and I think I read that Macs run Windows even better than they run OS X.

You can probably find one of the earliest Macbooks for not too much more than $400, I'm seeing some on Craigslist for $500-600.

But what's wrong with OS X? The only time I ever use Parallels is for a lot of the member downloads here, I use Boot Camp for the rare occasion that I play an old PC game, and the rest of the time I can do everything that I could do on a Windows PC plus more. Unless you're a gamer, OS X is very comparable in terms of functionality and availability of software.
