Hello

When I didn't have much content on my site, internal linking was relatively easy.
But now I have a lot of content. In this case, when I write new content, I'm worried about which article to link the internal link to.
Can I just link to the article I want to link to without any set order?
Or should I be mindful of the order and date of posting and link internally?
Are there any study materials or tips?

For internal linking, link relevant articles to each other based on content, not order or date. Ensure clear anchor text and link to both older and newer posts where applicable.

Make a note of each article published on the website along with the keywords and anchor texts used in it, which can help you in internal linking.

  • Crawl your site using Screaming Frog
  • Export an Internal HTML report as well as an All InLinks report
  • Export a GSC Performance report using the API (You can build something fast in Looker Report) and export a full report
  • Get the monthly search volume for each query (You can use Keywords Everywhere for this or use its API if the list of keywords is long)
  • Cluster all the keywords
With this information, it should be enough for you to map out the site´s internal linking structure and make sure everything is set properly.

One thing you need to do is define your pillar and supporting pages and work from there.

Remember, whenever auditing the internal links of a website you also need to focus on:
  • Potential broken internal links
  • Internal links with redirects (even redirect chains)
  • Check the internal link distribution (Inside SF that is the InLinks tab) - This is to identify high-value or performing pages with a low internal link count
  • Check for orphan pages
  • Conduct an anchor text analysis - Make sure the anchors used are unique and contextually relevant
  • Check the crawl depth - The deeper a content item is from the homepage the more its value will dilute in the eyes of Google. We need to aim for a crawl depth no higher than 3 (we can go 4 in some cases)
I hope this helps, cheers!
