The scary part is, people dont realise these big companies will sue, thats their only job, to find pictures that are stolen and sue. It's literally their business strategy.

You should take the image down. If they take you to court, they can only sue for damages, so contact the copyright holder (from a different email address) and ask what the cost would be to use the image in a similar way. You may have committed copyright infringement, that doesn't legally entitle them to extort you for an excessive amount.

I received a similar letter from a different company and they requested a similar amount for an image used on a social media account. I'm in the USA. I contacted the copyright holder and was told the image would only be ~$300 to use (so a fraction of their settlement offer). I have since chosen to ignore any messages from the company. They might spend the minimal amount of resources to harass me a few times with automated emails now that I'm in their system, but I don't see them bringing me to court for ~$300.

I did read of cases where celebrities or large brands used unauthorized images for commercial uses and got sued for a much more significant amount. That seems like a situation where a lawsuit might be worthwhile. In your situation (or in mine) I don't think it's worth their time.

seems theres hope cause they give u 14 days every month that makes no sense. if didnt bs, they would sue u long ago. theres small chance they will still sue u and just try to scary you into paying the sum so they dont have to sue. who knows?

u can google <<<this company name>>> sued me and check if they sued someone

If I was to respond to every email like this, and pay what they claim (for copyright infringements, for protecting my domain names somewhere in china, for someone recording me watching Ch1ld p0rn, for deleting a virus that will destroy all data on my server or smart phone, and for all kinds of other fabricated nonsense), I'd be broke within a week :).

Own many domains, and receive way too many emails of this kind every day...
Trust me--unless you get a letter from a lawyer (which won't happen), it's all just scam. And it can be even if the letter is signed by a lawyer.

Focus on things that matter and don't waste your time and energy bothering with people who instead of creating real value online (or offline), just try to make money by scamming the others.

So much disinformation here. Can't believe. This is pretty basic stuff. You can use any image you want on any site providing you aren't directly making money from it. Doesn't sound like OP was reselling the image or using the image in some way on paid products or services. These solicitation requests are scams. Pure and simple. You're an idiot if you pay.

This is blackhatworld, don't know what site you're on. There's tons of stuff that could be "fraudulent" here. Literally movie streaming sites is huge here and is a bigger fraud than using a single picture from Google.

I dont agree with it. Its blackhatworld SEO forum. Just my opinon. My point was, if you are going to steal, don't cry when you have to pay for it... I come to this forum for SEO topics. Not "I stole this and they found me, pls help"

Yeah and the firm will sue for much more than 700 euro and win. This will not just go away as I said before. All the people on here gave you some pretty terrible advice.

From my experience on the other side you could try a counter offer as they do accept those from time to time.

With so many legitimate ways to get images that are either low cost or free (unsplash.com for example or pixabay.com) its a shame that people still go use images that others have copyright ownership over.

Others should look at this as a warning to what they are doing and then decide if the risk is worth it.

Even if this is a blackhat forum, it doesn't change that this is illegal.

I informed myself on EU copyright in the last few years a lot. (don't really know about US though).

It works like this: If you use an image from someone without their content you are infringing copyright law.

Only exception to this is if the image is licences under a specific licence: CC0 is the best for example. Everyone can use without attribution.

If you use a CC BY 3.0 image and don't give appropriate attribution you are infringing copyright as well. A human solution would be to ask the person to take it down.

However, going to court right away is an option too. Typically they can sue you for a few hundred €. (depends on factors like how long you used it)

Coming back to the main topic. As you are a black hat you should know that the stuff you are doing is illegal.

I don't really know what I would do if I were you. Maybe a lawyer can get the thing sorted out for you. (Although quite expensive as well)
