Hello, I used a photo to illustrate an article on my blog in July 2018, and I received an email from a company called PICRIGHTS and who asked me to pay under 14 days a significant amount because I did not license.

How can they claim such a sum? I read a lot of topics on people's forums in my case, it seems that it is recent. Has anyone ever had a problem like this?

Was the image available as a royalty free licence or did you 'borrow' it?

Just remove the picture or link to them and don't reply to any email.

I just took a random image on google Image
I know that's is bad, but now I removed the picture, only 100 users max saw the picture, and they email me asking me to pay 1.2k€. They don't prove in the mail they own the picture or anything, they just sent me the URL of my site with the picture and if I had a licence number, but I have no licence, and they ask me to pay

Don't reply to the email, see if they follow it up.
I've never heard of them personally.

I think it's an official company working pour AFP (Agence France Presse), they found I used the picture on my website, but if I remove it, it should me ok, and I don't know how they can ask a random sum...

Don't say a word. Just remove the image and replace it with a royalty free image from Pexel, Unspalsh, or Shutterstock.

I would say you can answer on their email, state that the photo is removed, it won't happen again, you have no funds and cannot pay them anything.

    After that ignore them.

I've read an article related to this issue like a year ago but seems I can't find it atm.

The issue was the same, and they said that they had to pay the company that amount. They also mentioned that there are companies who leave software just to find sites that use images without copyrights. If you're from France, I'd take it serious tbh.

    Why?
There are based in switzerland as fare I know

I didn't answered yet and I think I will never answer

  18. Counter offer them to pay a lesser amount dear. Say that you're sorry and that all you can pay is 600 bucks and see if they respond. If not, I'd go for the whole amount.

Also did they mention from where the pic was taken? Is it Getty?

    Don't pay anything, don't reply.

If they are based in Switzerland it's more costly to get a case in the court in France than the actual amount (which a court never goes for the full amount which is requested at least in my country even if you have right)
