I'm trying make the gray parts of this pic white/more lighter.

For some reason I can't change it to white, though

I can change it to blue, red, and some other colors but not White. I used the color replacement tool:

    I posted my settings

How can I change it to white?

In the layers panel, find the layer you'd like to add a layer style to. Double click on it. Find the type of style you'd like to add, in this case color overlay.

Actually the way I would do this is:

New layer>fill with white>change blend mode to "overlay"

Click the layer, then click the "Fx" button at the bottom of the layers panel...Choose "Color overlay..." then pick a color and in the "Blend mode" pick a few different options until you get what you want.
