I see all these beautiful BST's (rakoom2002's vitamin D BST looks beautiful, I had to have him design one for me - Botwiz's are gorgeous too), banners (lukaB, the banner in your sig is jaw dropping), and avatars (no real examples, Harro's is cool i guess), so I thought "damn, I gotta learn to do this shit".

Any good sources/youtube videos you guys have used? Any photoshop gods willing to give some tips?

    Thanks

    chad

I'll suggest you improve the design skill by visit high quality
photoshop tutorials such psdtuts.com and abduzeedo

Also get several high quality portfolio sites regarding graphic
design to learn with and it'll help your work to improve since
you'll be raising your standard from there.

Also checkout some site like behance.net - deviantart - creattica and etc.
Hopefuly it'll help to achieve what are you looking for.

Just keep practice and practice, you'll be much better before you realize it.

    Best luck

While it is great you are interested in learning, you won't be able to create anything close to as nice of the graphics if you have no experience. That's pretty much a given, but I wanted to throw it out there so that you know if you put in the hours you can make it happen. I can't remember the name of the site, but if you learn a couple ways to add cool effects you can replicate that multiple times and learn how to create some decent looking graphics.

Using PS is waaay easier then it seems. There are tons of different ways to do the same thing so if you dont know how to do something, you can get creative.

I think where a lot of people fail is they have a bad eye for stuff. Picture what you want and make it happen. I've designed a ton of different things in Photoshop from shirts, to flyers, to images for sites.

The thing I found that helped me more then anything was brushes and custom shapes. You can download tons of them for free. A lot of pros will swear against them, but I find that they are the basis to good PS work without becoming a PS pro. hope this helps

My banner isn't suppose to be up there :p I don't find it superb , but it is great.

You wouldn't believe how much I paid for it ; One tip: Think outside the box, I didn't find my designer from BHW/WF/Warrior, I went outside the box and found one.

I learned through lynda.com then I found other artists work that I wanted to emulate. Go to dribble.com and follow artists there.

Download graphics from graphic river and dissect them. The power in photoshop is in actions, layer styles and batching. Google that, learn it and mater it. Also down and dirty tricks shows some good stuff. But you also should learn illustrator as well.

Learn the difference between .eps, .png, .gif, .jpg filetypes. If you don't know already. There's also forums online in case you get stuck. Also starting with a great font is imperative. Dafont.com is good also I like "the league of extraordinary fonts" (can't remember if that's the exact name at this point)

Also learn about using font licenses Google what happened to the Harry Potter Graphic Design team. They didn't have the right licensing for merchandise. 😳

Anyways that's all I have thought of at this moment. Hope it helps you guys!! 😄😊

Lynda & PSD Tuts are both great resources, and I know what you mean, lynda starts of slow and a little irritating but once you get into the intermediate tutorials it's alright.

Really it all comes down to learning what each button does. And how things work in conjunction with one another. Brushes are cool. I also forgot you should learn about your dpi in graphics. Aim for 300 dpi for all print items except large graphics. 72 dpi for web.

I've gotten 150 dpi to look great for small billboards and backdrops.

Oh and ALWAYS ALWAYS check spelling. From memory I believe it's under the edit tab.

Don't forget to search in PS first google second. Dont spend too much time just trying to wing it. There are good tutorials everywhere.

Also master the pen tool it's a bit tricky at first. But way worth it.

    Hi mate,

We can provide you with videos of thousand hours.. but this isn't the way how to learn it.

    there are 2 ways:
    1) take a course
    2) learn while doing actual jobs

I suppose - you will go for 2nd choice, so start with playing around with your own facebook profile images.. then try to create an actual website layout in psd...

there is no way of learning photoshop without really struggling with it ;)

    enjoy the pain and joy

The biggest thing you need is creativity. Anyone can learn the programs but if youre not creative youll struggle. I had to work on unlocking my inner creativity, once you have that or if you have it already everything else will fall into place.
