Quick Backstory:

Man arrested in small town which made all local papers. Charges dropped immediately however damage done in court of public opinion. This was about 5 years ago. Usual ORM methods were used to move the negative results to 2nd page, few websites made, many web 2.0s, etc. Given it was in papers the usual methods did not work for very long.

If he put out ads, press releases, etc in the same papers would they outrank the now 5 year old negative results? Seems obvious but given nothing apparently happens in the area they would want people to find the negative articles. I figure new guest posts and the like in higher authority papers would outrank the original articles however that is an expensive proposition if it's a temporary solution.

Any thoughts on this or any other ideas?

Parasites are your friend with this one. What positive things has the wrong accused done since then? This could be written about do that when his name is googled, the positive things will crop up first.

If the original solution didn't work long-term, there is a problem with the original solution.

From what you said, I would drop the web 2.0 stuff. It's very low quality, looks strange in real SERPS and is inherently unstable (spam, site being sold to new owner, Google devaluing, etc.).

I always prefer to control the SERPs as much as possible with properties that I own (domains over web 2.0's). Even a site like Medium won't be around in 5 years...they'll continue gating content, increase the Freemium model, no content without subscription, and then no search results. So many companies are investing heavily in Medium and they're going to end up with unhappy clients eventually.

Just because his negative is in a newspaper doesn't mean you need to have positives in a newspaper. Newspapers can be great, but you don't have to use the same type of positive to counteract a negative.

Thanks for the info. Makes sense. It looks like the EMDs stopped getting new content a few years ago so that will now change. There are 4 of them as of this moment.
