I went from 3000 uniques per day down to 700. It hurts... and from what I can tell from reading countless similarities, there are trends.

These are the things that I believe did me in:

    1) I was stupid enough to pay for a non-contextual link blast 15 months ago as part of a high PR package.

    2) All of my 300 + personally written posts all start with the same phrase. For example, if the site was based on running, the post would be called:
"How to Run in the Forrest"
"How to Run in the Snow"
"How to Run on the Beach" ... yaddah.. yaddah.... x 300+ posts

This is a bad example, but it makes perfect sense within my niche. In other words, even though my content was SEO targeted, completely unique, had tons of images, with an awesome design layout, it was just was too repetitive for the Penguin.

    3) Additionally, I have an exact match domain. Lets pretend it is "Run.com" Basically every single link pointing at my site has "run" in it. I believe that this told Mr. Penguin that the site was over-optimized.

RECOVERY GAME PLAN - Based on these findings I am planning to fix them with the following solutions:

    1) Build more high PR contextual backlinks to offset the shitty ones. (side question: do you guys use a IP masking browser when leaving comments? If so, what do you use?)

    2) Add a reader response and product review section and a forum to make sure that all of my post's H1's don't begin with the same generic title. "How to Run in...". I haven't decided if I will go back and diversify the wording on old post just yet.

    3) Make sure while I am posting high PR backlinks that I am doing so without words that overlap with my exact-match-domain of my website. I'll still keep the words contextual, but just use different words. This will hopefully offset the ones that are sure to develop naturally.

    4) After watching SEOMOZ, I am going to add some new viral elements, like a calculator, a vote or something similar. These will help in attracting some more organic links. I'm told that Google is pushing support towards brandable websites. To that point, I will also be creating an Facebook page as an extension and getting it blasted with 5,000-10,000 Likes. I don't have any use for Facebook page outside of this purpose, but it can't hurt.

That's it for now. Wish me luck. If you have any thoughts, I would love to hear them from you! It's Penguin Hunting Season!

Thanks for the info. I really enjoy when people share their failures not because I am a sadistic person but because it helps me avoid making the same mistakes.

Take one note: your finding may be wrong.

One of my websites with contextual links only has been hitted yesterday! Other with contextual links, many profile links, even xrumer links is just fine. All of my websites got only orginal content.

Site which is hitted has nice looking fanpage with 2000 likes, twitter with more then 1000 followers also yahoo directory listing, edu links, social signals...

ps. site which is still fine got one same word in every post just like in your example

I find it odd how people act as if updates such as Panda or Penguin somehow completely change the game. All these updates do is tighten the noose on dumb SEO tactics little by little. So for those of us who build carefully these likely won't even be noticed. I've actually seen improvement in recent weeks.

So IMHO these updates actually reward good black haters and punish foolish tactics. We might not like a changing game, but if this job were EASY everybody would be doing it and we couldn't make money. Most BHW members should be smart enough to avoid the big pitfalls. Think ahead of the game guys and stay sharp ;)

Google is "attempting" to fine tune it's tactics to mirror what we are doing... but since they are a large lumbering corporation it always seem that they are a few steps behind. Sure, they'll lean into a lucky home run now and again, but what I've noticed is that they don't want to kill SEO so much as keep it quiet enough as to prevent the general public and their average user base from noticing that it exists and REALLY effect Google's results in a big way. It's all about money. Luckily.

i think the viral elements is what there looking for, i put calcs on 2 sites that got hit, did the disavow and deleted any links i controlled, looked and took out any repetitive phrases or text that i thought may hurt, this was a few weeks ago.

How did it go by the way, update?

Consider using multiple IP's, or post some links from other locations. Make sure your service uses different and different types of writers. Not everything has to be perfect, in fact that looks like your first issue.
