I got 2x website hit by Penguin in April.

I havent done any more work on these but they do have some good unique content.

They are kinda related (say cars and motorbikes) and since this new EMD update hit I was thinking of taking all content from both sites and merge it into a brand new one (branded .com address - no more EMDs!!!).

How can I go about de-indexing them and then safely re-using the content and articles?

    Cheers

better to just delete the site completely , rather than de-indexing.Then use the content, probably add few new bits and pieces here and there in the content

Google will de-index your site when you delete it

deindexing means it won't show up in search engines, it doesn't mean google still won't see it. Delete the site completely, wait for it to be removed from index, then reuse your content. first check if the content doesn't already exist elsewhere.

Create a .htaccess file for your old site and put this in it: Header set X-Robots-Tag "noindex, nofollow"

That will deindex the old site within 2-4 weeks.
