Penguin 2.0, judging from 18 of my sites which engage in Blackhat has not been all that bad.

The most interesting part of this update and the part which speaks the most promise is how sites which have been penalized, several of them, have regained their rankings. To me this speaks of the random nature of Google's new algo.

We need to stop thinking of the SERPS in a linear sense, "This site has 200 SAPE link and is still ranking, why am I hit?". Google's algorithm is flawed, it may never hit that SAPE site, we need to start accepting the scenario we are being dealt. I believe that right now, Google offers some great opportunity for blackhats because no longer is there such an uphill battle where the site with the most links is the strongest. Now, it seems sites with few links but smart strategy can outrank, which means there is a lot of traffic up for grabs.

I wrote about the effects of Penguin 2.0 on 18 heavily blackhat sites here http://agentblackhat.com/this-is-what-happened-to-18-blackhat-sites-after-penguin-2-0/

Nice article. I do think we probably share similar views. I too notice that a few days ago some sites hit by the older versions of Penguin shot up hundreds of places, almost as if a reversal of the penalty. They have not restored to their original premium positions, but they are definitely within striking distance, and I will probably investigate if additional link building on such sites restores them to their original glory.

I think (and hope) that we are seeing a more "relaxed" Penguin meaning that the effects are milder, and perhaps sites that are hit can recover. Unlike previous versions where if you were hit basically you were screwed, this update seemed to not be as drastic.

Definitely still a lot of opportunities for black hatters, but I guess we will have probably a better idea in the next month or so.

For anyone else, what were your anchor text ratios like in accordance with how your site performed through the update?

Tried to keep below 3% and most of my campaigns were unharmed.

I can tell you that anchor text was not an issue as I have some very high percentage test sites that are fine.

This. I have up to 70-80% exact anchor text ratio and my sites are doing fine.

This is the random nature of the way Google's algo works. The data just doesn't correlate properly to pinpoint specific causes of not just why good sites went down, but also why really bad sites with lots of spam actually went UP.
